The National Guard of the United States of America was activated in 1947 by President Harry S. Truman as a potential stepping stone to eventually creating the full-time military branch known as the National Guard. The Iowa National Guard was the first national guard unit activated in Iowa. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department mobilized two companies of infantry in 1942 and 1943, but they were not permanently assigned until after World War II ended.
The Iowa National Guard responded to an influx of war veterans following World War II and began training for possible active duty in October 1946. On November 25, 1946, Governor Floyd Bentsen activated the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Regiment (Airmobile) from Cedar Rapids. This brigade originally consisted of three battalions: Company A from Waterloo; Company B from Ottumwa; and Company C from Des Moines. These companies were redesignated as battalion elements on February 14, 1947 when Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion became element headquarters units with responsibility for all battalion activities under commandant authority while also providing administrative support to other commands within the state military organization.
On May 10, 1948 Captain Ethel Kapp assumed command of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion when Commandant Orville Humes resigned due to health reasons. Captain Kapp had been a member of the regiment since it formed on October 15th, 1946 under Lieutenant Colonel John Wittemeyer Jr.. She held that post until her retirement on January 1st, 1951 effective at 5pm that night. In 1949 Captain Kapp organized a drill team which she called “The Gals” after General George Meade’s famous Female Division during World War I. A year later she organized a “Pioneers” team which played its first game against Blackhawk High School September 17th.
In 1951 Captain Kapp took command of cadet units at Drake University before assuming command of Marion County Sheriff's Department Cadet Unit #6 on July 1st."Marion County Sheriff's Department Cadet Unit #6 - History"
Captain Kapp commanded Marion County Sheriff's Department's Cadet Unit #7 from 1961-1964 before becoming Commandant for all sheriff's department cadets on December 2nd

Marion is a small town in Iowa that has been around since the 1800s. The town was originally called Willard and it changed its name to Marion in 1892. The town is located on the Des Moines River, about 20 miles north of downtown Des Moines. It is bordered by Clearwater Township to the east, Miller Township to the west, and Marshalltown Borough to the south. The population of Marion was 1,870 at the 2010 census. The history of Marion can be traced back to 1818 when Captain John Quincy was appointed as commissioner for Indian Affairs in British India. He founded a trading post near what is now Marion and named it after his ancestor, Major General Jonathan Quincampoore. In 1829, Captain John Quincy married Sarah Ladd and they moved their family to what is now Marion. They started a store and tavern called The House of Hope which served as a meeting place for farmers and traders from nearby towns. In 1835, Captain Quincy sold his business interest in The House of Hope to Elisha Goodrich who renamed it Goodrich's Tavern & Hotel). Goodrich operated it until 1840 when he bought it from Mr. Harker for $206$. In 1850, Mrs. John Quincy (Captain John Quincy's wife) established another store called The Gables which served as a meeting place for farmers and traders from surrounding towns until she died in 1865; her husband continued operations until 1870.. In 1880, Zadock Rice began farming on land that later became part of Marion Township. He built a log cabin on his farm which he named "The White Swan". Rice continued farming here until 1918 when he sold his property to Wm Cramer who donated it to the township.. In 1919-1920, Zadock Rice’s grandson James Fenton erected a wooden frame house at 516 W 2nd St which became known as "The White Swan" after him grandfather's original farmhouse.. In 1932-1933Zadock Rice’s great grandson Roy Fenton erected an addition onto “The White Swan” – this addition became known as “The Old Courthouse” due to its unique design.. During World War II both sides used "The White Swan" for shelter during air raids; however no damage was done cuz windows were bulletproof! finally closed down due lack of customers in late 50′s

In 1914, the National Guard was merged with the Army to create the Department of Defense. Today, the National Guard plays an important role in our society by providing law enforcement and security services, as well as performing other ceremonial purposes. In 1976, Congress passed a bill extending military rank privileges once again to members of Congress who are not actually serving on active duty at that time; however, this privilege is still not retroactive so members must apply for it every two years! A few notable examples include Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) being promoted from Sergeant Major to Brigadier General after he successfully led House Republicans through scandalous session in 2014![1] It should be noted that many current & former Members Of The House Of Representatives are also honorary Military Officers![2] -Kites – One such gift was given in memory of Private First Class William Halsey “Bill” Swenson who died while serving with Company K2/5th Infantry Regiment during World War I He is buried at Arlington Cemetery with full honors along side his comrades killed in action.[3] On July 4th each year since 1921, American Legion Post #824 hosts a parade through Arlington Cemetery honoring all those Kites Have Lived So Far Parade participants!!!
The National Guard was founded on July 25, 1903 in the state of New York. The first National Guard unit was organized at Syracuse, New York and it was known as the 2nd Infantry Regiment. On September 16, 1907, the 1st Infantry Regiment was activated at Binghamton, New York and it became part of called artillery regiment. On November 15, 1910 the regiment became known as 5th Infantry Regiment and finally on December 3rd 1912 when it became known as 8th Infantry Regiment. The regiment deployed to World War I in 1917 where they served under various commands including 9th Infantry Division (1917-1918), 10th Infantry Division (1918-1920), 11th Armored Brigade (1920-1921) and 12th Armored Brigade (1921-1922). In World War II the regiment deploys to North Africa where they serve in both European Theater of Operations and Mediterranean Theater of Operations. They also serve in Korea during Operation Neptune’s Spear from 1951 until 1953 when they are demobilized after that campaign.
Marion, Iowa was founded in 1845 by a group of men who were looking for a new home. The town was named after General James K. Polk and it became a center for the agricultural industry. The town experienced some growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, but itdeclined in importance during the years following World War I. However, Marion has continued to experience occasional growth throughout its history and it is now an important community located within north-central Iowa. The first residents of Marion were people from New York City. By 1845, many of these newcomers had come to the area to work on farms that were being developed by President John C. Fremont. On July 4th, 1845, a group of men from Marion arrived at Burlington Ferry near present-day North High Street and State Road 20B in what is now known as downtown Marion. They began construction on a small log cabin which they dubbed "thefounding house." Although there are no records indicating how many individuals actually lived in downtown Marion at this time, there is evidence that it grew rapidly around this time due to the influx of people from outside ofIowa City. In 1846, the first school was built in downtown Marion and soon thereafter several other buildings were erected along North High Street including the original courthouse building (which still stands today). During the late 1800s and early 1900s, commerce flourished in downtown Marion as businesses such as stores, hotels, butcher shops and wagon trains served motorists traveling east-west through Sioux City or west-east through Omaha on their way to marketplaces such as Des Moines or Waterloo. This economic boom helped support a population of approximately 5500 people when Downtown Marion epigenomized into its current form circa 1910 A map dated 1911 shows that betweenNW 4th St & Wabash Ave & S Milwaukee Rd contain approx 6 blocks with various Stores etc., while NW 3rd St contains 2 Blocks/Plymouth Rd Developments
In 1852, the first post office was established in Marion, Iowa. The town grew rapidly due to its location and access to water supplies. By 1861, Marion had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, the U.S. Post Office moved from Des Moines to Marion and the town became an incorporated municipality. The population growth continued until the early 20th century when it began to decline due to various factors including technological advances and immigration.
