Cobb, bought land for a trading post near present-day downtown Marion and built a log cabin. A military garrison was established at Cobb's post in 1865 and soldiers from all over the Midwest brought their gifts to the small town during that time. The First World War brought many new residents to Marion and they quickly started buying property within walking distance of the post office. In 1916, Second Lieutenant John Crouch opened a store on Main Street which became one of the most popular businesses in town. His store offered items such as food, supplies and clothing to troops stationed in nearby Fort Dodge. In 1917, General Leonard Wood ordered all army posts throughout Iowa closed due to anemia caused by trench warfare. As a result, many soldier's families moved into Marion and began shopping for war-related supplies at Cobb's store and other local stores. By 1919, almost every family in town had at least one relative serving in the military forces overseas or attached to some unit back home. During World War II, more than 10% of Marion’s population served in munitions production plants located throughout rural Iowa! When war came we knew it would be tough but we also knew our community stood together thru thick & thin! With so much going on we were excited for anything that could bring us joy; whether it was watching America go throughriegt or just spending time with friends & family………..that is what made our days feel amazing! As of 1880, there were eleven businesses in Marion and one school. The population increased gradually until it reached its peak at around 2,000 in 1910. By 1920, the population had decreased to 1,500 while business operations grew steadily but not as rapidly as they had been before. By 1930, only one business remained open in Marion and the population had fallen below 1,000 again.
