Marion, Iowa is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settler in Marion was James Custer who arrived in 1855. He and his family were the first white people to live in what is now Marion. In 1916, Edwin Hodge settled in Marion and became its first Mayor. The city of Marion was organized on February 15, 1917 by a vote of its citizens. A post office called "Marion" was established in 1911, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1953. In 1951, the United States Postal Service introduced ZIP Codes as standard for addressing mail. ZIP Code 51501 became the town's new ZIP Code when it joined the Uniontown postal district on July 1 of that year. As rural areas move away from mailing with delivery men serving only one small community (like ZIP Code 62234), there has been increasing demand for service within zip codes that encompass more than one small town or village. On January 1st 2019, all unincorporated areas east of Interstate 80 were added to the city limits making Marion an official city! On December 10th 2009, Mayor Edwin Hodge announced that he would not seek reelection due to health concerns; he had been mayor since 1996 but only served two terms because he had cancerous tissue removed from his back during surgery nine months earlier on November 3rd which led to his deciding not to run for re-election after all
