The community began as a small village called Cedar Rapids on the banks of the Des Moines River. It was laid out by James Kapp and others as an agricultural settlement in 1854. A cotton gin and other mills were built near the town during the 1850s and 1860s; however, they all failed because of competition from larger cities such as Chicago and St Louis. In 1896 the Keokuk Manufacturing Company was founded by George Wagoner to provide jobs for local people in the wake of World War I; it became one of America's leading textile mills until its closure in 1996. The city has grown rapidly since then, with a population increase of over 20% between 2000 and 2010 alone (though this growth has been mostly suburban).
