The Keokuk National Guard was organized on July 1, 1854. The first regiment was called the "Iowa Volunteer Infantry." It was raised in Iowa and became part of the Union army during the American Civil War. On November 5, 1861, the Iowa National Guard fought at Bull Run while under command of General Ulysses S. Grant. The regiment lost 116 men and two officers killed and four wounded. In 1865, the regiment became part of the Fourteenth Corps which participated in the Overland Campaign and Battle of Pea Ridge. The unit disbanded in 1866 due to a lack of volunteers for service in Reconstruction-era America. In 1912, when Keokuk incorporated as a city, its citizens decided to establish a national guard battalion to commemorate their community’s history as a garrison town during Missouri’s war for independence (1863-65). Two years later, on January 8, 1916, five members of Keokuk's Citizens' Militia Company were sworn into office as members of the Keokuk National Guard Battalion #1 by Mayor John Hickey. After World War I ended with Victory in Europe Day on October 14th 1918 (the day after US President Woodrow Wilson’s speech at an armistice commemoration ceremony), local nationals volunteered for military duty until September 1919 when they were recalled home because there was no regular Army presence left in Central Iowa following World War I. When World War II began on September 2nd 1939Keokuk's citizens again mobilized to support our country by becoming members of units such as Tank Regiment 902 (#19), Pee Wee Truck Squadron 106 (#8), 120mm Mortar Platoon 3rd Battalion 6th Marines (#3)and Signal Company A (divisional headquarters).Unit strength gradually decreased throughout WWII but did not end until 1945 when all unit members returned home from overseas assignments including seven enlistees who had become certified Air Force pilots through Officer Candidate School at Maxwell Air Force Base near Montgomery Alabama; these men flew combat missions over Japan from Mitsubishi A7M Zero fighters Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers flying out from Wanakabata airfield along Witham Peninsula before finally surrendering Japan on August 15th 1945 relieved by United States Naval ForcesTask force 38 that included ships USS Enterprise (CVE-64) and USS Sioux City (CVL-77) anchored off Wakaba Island about midway between Kyushu Peninsula and Okinawa island
