Keokuk, Iowa is a small town in the US state of Iowa. The population was 2,883 at the 2010 census and 3,421 as of 2016. In 2015, Keokuk was listed as one of the " safest places to live" by Forbes Magazine. It is located in Warren County. The town began as a cluster of log cabins on the banks of the Vermilion River in 1848. It grew quickly due to its strategic location - it straddles both US- 41 and US- 35, making it accessible from all sides. By 1860, Keokuk had a post office, store and school. A railroad arrived in 1871 and helped drive the growth even further; by 1909, Keokuk had a hospital and three businesses (gas station, grocery store and livery stable). In 1899, local farmer James Wickersham donated land for what would become Keokuk High School. The first students were enrolled in September 1900. Today, Keokuk's public schools offer high school graduation rates above 90%. In 2006/2007 the town built a new football stadium which seats 622 people and has recently been renovated with an added indoor turf field that can be used for soccer games or other activities such as concerts or weddings; this project was completed within budget despite some initial challenges with weather conditions resulting in play being cancelled several times during construction
