Keokuk is a city in Cherokee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settler in Keokuk was James Cook in 1836. In 1847, John Davenport arrived and started selling goods from his farm on the corner of First and Main Streets. In 1854, David Wells came to Keokuk with his family and built a log cabin on an east side lot near the present-day community square. Wells store opened in 1865 and served as the nucleus of what would become Keokuk's commercial district. Architecturally, Keokuk reflects its early pioneer days; many of its buildings were designed by John Hargrave or other local architects including Jno. Ayer & Sons (banking house), Elijah Ladd (firestone mine), Wm. Prentiss (warehouse) and Chas Sibley (school building). In 1915, Samuel Dowell organized what would become known as the "Iowa Republican Party" which helped to power then-Governor William Hodges during his two terms in office from 1916 to 1920; Dowell also served as town clerk from 1922 until his death in 1951. During World War II, over 1,500 residents lost their lives when German bombers bombed downtown Keokuk during their raid on Aug 24th 1944; following that event town leaders decided to erect a memorial plaque outside City Hall commemorating those killed that day [1] The city's current name may be derived from this time period – KEOKUK means "city founded by Americans." After years of growth led by advances in transportation -Keokuk incorporation as a city occurred on December 5th 1948 – many issues related to quality of life began bubbling under the surface beginning with housing shortages becoming more pressing with limited land available for developing new neighborhoods while still maintaining much older neighborhoods largely unchanged since before incorporation became possible In 1969 floods destroyed most of downtown but did not damage any residential areas leaving only commercial areas damaged while raising questions about whether they'd ever be able to rebuild due both flooding events had shown some flaws inherent within city planning process particularly regarding floodplain management . finally after years of public outcry various development restrictions were put into place limiting property rights for certain developers………………………………………..
