It is part of Johnson County and is bordered to the north by Sioux City, to the east by Waterloo, and to the south by Cedar Rapids. The first people in Johnston were Native Americans who lived there for centuries before European settlers arrived. In 1825, a group of five men from Illinois named John A. Johnston came downriver to what is today Johnston City and began trading with the native community. They built a log cabin in what is now downtown Johnston and started a store selling goods from their ship called "The Hope". The town grew rapidly from its modest beginnings and soon had a post office, two churches, four stores, two schools, and enough room for another 300 people when it was platted out as an incorporated town in 1867. By 1870, Johnston had more than 1,000 residents and boasted several hotels including one that could seat up to 350 people. Johnston experienced some significant growth during World War I which led to increased trade with Europe; however, it also saw heavy fighting between American soldiers and German forces which destroyed many homes and businesses in the city limits. After war ended in 1918, many residents returned home while others moved away because of changing economic conditions or new opportunities within Johnson County or elsewhere in Iowa. Today much of what once existed within downtown Johnston has been replaced by new housing developments or strip malls such as those found near Interstate 35W Boulevard (known locally as "the desirability belt").
