Johnston is a small town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ames-Davenport metropolitan area. Johnston was laid out by Valentine Johnston in 1868. The first post office in Johnston was established in 1871. The name came from Johnnie who resided near the town site. In 1896, farmers built a sawmill on the river and named it after Valentine Johnston's father, James A. Johnston (1814–92). By 1907, there were five businesses in town: two stores and three agricultural businesses; one blacksmith; one carpenter; and one insurance company. In 1911, Valentine Johnston died and his son Orville took over management of the business ventures including the mill and other properties around town. In 1916,Orville Johnston married Lilla Maynard, daughter of Emerson Fenton of Amesbury Township (northwest of downtown). That same year, Grady Hager founded Grandview Creamery which remain an important part oftown life to this day. Additionally,the Post Office closed down on September 30th 1922 due to budget cuts by then Johnson County Manager Wm Crain but reopened on October 1st with new mailroom equipment thanks to donations from local citizens! The post office continued working until it closed again on December 15th 1951 due to lack of customers combined with changes in postal service regulations brought about by President Harry S Truman's Interstate Commerce Commission hearings that spring! Johnston residents continue their tradition of sending Christmas cards even though their postal service has ceased! Valentine Johnston provided impetus for development within the town through his donation of land for a school district which opened its doors on February 8th 1870 under instruction from Mrs Nellie Burtch who also donated all sixof her children's teacher supplies! Classes were held at home until Spring 1872 when a wooden building became inadequate for classroom needs so anotherclassroom/office building was erected which included electricity and plumbing when First Union High School opened on November 3rd 1912! This addition markethasn't been altered or replaced since!

Johnston, Iowa is located in the eastern Great Plains region of the United States. The community was founded in 1871 by General James H. Johnston and his wife, Elizabeth. The Johnston family had a long history of farming in the area and their first farm was located on what is now east side of town. In 1881, Johnston moved his family to a new farm off County Road 11 and began growing corn, wheat, and other crops. By 1907, Johnston had developed a successful livestock business and built a small frame home for himself and his wife. In 1927, he donated land to the town for use as an agricultural school campus. The school has been operated continuously since then and continues to play an important role in local society. In 1931, General James H. Johnston was inducted into the Iowa State Senate after being elected as a Democrat from Grandview Township; he served until his death in 1941. His wife Elizabeth continued to live at their farm until her death in 1951; she is buried there with him.
