Johnston, Iowa is a town of about 8,000 people located in the northwest corner of the state. It was founded in 1854 by General James W. Johnston and his wife, Lillie. The Johnston family had been living there since the 1800s. The first law enforcement officer in Johnston was Constable John Aiken. In 1875, Captain George Henthorn became the first police officer on duty. By 1907, there were sixteen policemen on duty in Johnston. The population of Johnston grew from 6,000 to 10,000 during the 20th century. However, crime rates have remained relatively stable over that time period. One of the most famouspolice officers who worked in Johnston was Bill Clinton's predecessors as President of Arkansas – Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin – both natives of nearby Johnson City. Armstrong was born into a poor farming family while Aldrin was born into an even poorer family but he managed to overcome obstacles including being expelled from college for drinking and being arrested for burglary multiple times before becoming an astronaut!
