The Johnston Navy Deployed Gift History is a unique and important history of the Naval Reserve in Johnston, Iowa. The gift history began with the donation of a lifeboat by Captain John A. Thomson in 1922. This boat, which was named the "Linda", was donated to the city of Johnston as a memorial to World War I veterans who had died in battle. In 1933, Captain Franklin W. Beardsley donated an engine and oars for the "Hornet" lifeboat that operated in downtown Johnston. In 1952, Captain Donnell J. Johnston, commander of the Union army during the American Civil War. The town's first store opened in 1855 and its first post office was established in 1857. In 1870, Johnston became one of five towns that formed the new city of Des Moines. The city experienced rapid growth during the early 20th century due to its location on the Mississippi River and its position as a rail junction for Midwest shipment of goods to eastern markets. By 1920, Johnston had become one of Iowa's largest cities with over 100 businesses and 2,500 residents. During World War II, Johnston emerged as an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its location on both sides of the river between Omaha and Des Moines International Airport (now Keesler Air Force Base). In 1945, following World War II's end, Johnston lost much of its economic importance when Interstate highways began routing traffic away from older industrial sites near downtown and towards more recent destinations such as Ames or Davenport. However, local businesses have since regained some prominence in downtown Johnston through marketing initiatives such as "Johnston's Food Court." Today, Johnston remains a small but active community with a strong cultural mix that includes Methodism and other Protestant denominations along with some Muslim refugees from Pakistan who have immigrated to Iowa since late 2007 after being given amnesty by President Obama under his America First presidency

The first post office was established in that year. In 1850, it had a population of just five people. By 1860, the population had increased to seventy-six people. The first school was opened in 1865. In 1870, Johnstown became a city and began to develop its own infrastructure such as a water system and sewer system. The first store opened in 1888. In 1903, Johnson County was created from parts of Johnson and Hardin counties; Johnston remained an unincorporated community within Johnson County until 1959 when it became part of the new city of Amesbury within Amesbury Township boundaries
