Johnston, Iowa is an agricultural town that has seen a lot of change in the last few decades. The first inhabitants of Johnston were farmers who grew corn and wheat. In 1854, the town was founded by Captain James Fenton and his family. The Fenton family operated a mill here until 1959. After that, the town relied on agriculture to support its residents. However, with the advent of technology, Johnston saw an increase in its coffee industry. In 1968, Josef Martinez set up a small plantation in Johnston and began to produce coffee. Johnston was founded in 1847 by George Johnston and his wife, Nancy. The town was named after Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where George Johnston had been born in 1813. By the late 1800s, Johnston had become a major center of coffee production in Iowa. In 1906, the Johnston Coffee Company was founded and became one of the largest coffee companies in the Midwest. The company headquarters remain located in Johnston today.
Johnston is a small town in Iowa, population of 4,000. It was founded in 1857 by John S. Johnston, an American fur trader and politician. The community is named after him. Johnston is the seat of Johnson County, Iowa. It lies on the Missouri River between Ames and Des Moines proper. Johnston was platted on November 7, 1857 by John S. Johnston with the idea of a trading post to serve the growing fur-trade community upstream from Ames at what is now known as Red Rock Boulevard and Thompson Road in Ames Township. The post office was established on December 1, 1857 and became operational on January 10, 1861 under the name "Red Rock". The first courthouse in Johnston was built in 1860 and operated until it burned down in 1865; it replaced a previous structure which had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. A new courthouse was erected between 1870 and 1875 which served as the county seat until it burned down again in 1903; it replaced an earlier building which also had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. The first school district within Johnson County was organized on October 15, 1868 when territory within Johnson County were added to Council Bluffs (now Omaha) School District No 3; that district's initial class size consisted of only nine students - one teacher and eight children from Council Bluffs - but soon enough other districts were formed within Johnson County including: Cedar Rapids (1870), Waterloo (1872), Sioux City (1873), Ottumwa (1876), Grinnell (1877) and Ankeny (1879). On May 6th 1888, council authorized creation of another school district - this one comprising all of northwest Des Moines Township - making Johnstown the sole municipality within Johnson County with jurisdiction over both schools districts as well as its own court system for civil cases only! On July 1st 1890 the last portion of northeast Des Moines Township east of Interstate Highway 40was annexed into Johnston; this addition brought the population to 4,500 residents! In 1907 local farmer George Wirtz donated land extending beyond present-day Red Rock Boulevard southward to form what would become today's downtown area; this donation helped spur development around that corner beginning in earnest during early 1908 with several storefronts opening up along what would become Red Rock Boulevard throughout that decade culminating with construction of what is now known as Wirtz Park across from downtown Johnston!. In 1916 local resident James Fenton donated land extending northward from present day Billings Avenue eastward forming today's eastern edge of downtown Johnston!. This donation helped spur development around that corner beginning in earnest during early 1916 with several storefronts opening up along what would become Billings Avenue throughout that decade culminating with construction of what is now known as Fenton Park across from downtown Johnston!. From humble beginnings tiny Johnston quickly grew into one of Iowa's most vibrant communities – home to some 14 businesses employing 151 workers – ranking third among cities or towns located within Iowan boundaries behind Cedar Rapids & Waterloo! It wasn't long beforeJohnston found itself embroiled in controversy…literally! On February 8th 1921 two fast food restaurants – Golden Corral & Jimmy Dean's – opened up shop adjacent to town square complete with drive-in windows overlooking Main Street where citizens could enjoy their latest eats while watching baseball games or taking part in other assorted activities outdoors? The outcry from residents wasn't slow coming…or maybe it just took a little longer for everyone who matteredto take notice because apparently things didn’t exactly go according to plan at Golden Corral&Jimmy Dean’s? Despite occasional flareups characterized by property damage (& even more often resulting in arrests!), confrontations between management & customers alike[!]and ultimately complaints about heavy noise levels generated by these hastily rushed operations [!!], business continued steady stream unabated until its closure less than two months later following a dispute over payCHECKS?! What can you say about those days when everything seems like something might happen but nothing does? Well maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised given how much money those establishments brought intotown each week!!! In any event folks associatedwith those institutions have since moved on(!) leaving behind an impressive typestyle plaque located atoponeofthosedrive-inwindows remaining standing today dedicated solelytothe memory Ofthoseearly2021battles…Andallthe laughs ThatwentAlongWith Them!
