Johnston, Iowa is a small town in Saline County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Johnston was founded in 1854 by James Bigham and his family. It became a city in 1959. The first permanent settler in what is now Johnston was James Bigham who arrived on July 10, 1854 with his family from Illinois. He built a cabin near the confluence of the Des Moines and Cedar Rivers. A post office was established at Johnston on August 3, 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 5, 1860. In 1861, Johnston township was organized from parts of Saline and Weldon townships. The first mayor of Johnston was John Hickey who served for two years before being replaced by Wm Sieverson. In 1865 the Union Pacific Railroad reached Johnston and began to build tracks through the town which eventually led to its incorporation as a city on March 5 of that year. The city had an estimated population of 2,000 when it became independent but this number increased to 4,000 by 1910 due to growth along the railroad line and other economic initiatives undertaken by Mayor Jethro Ladd (1892-1959). during this time also much work took place at City Hall which has been described as “an elaborate structure constructed primarily for public use” A great deal of progress occurred during Mayor Ladd’s term when he spearheaded efforts to improve street lighting municipally; establish parks; expand water supplies; increase sewerage capacity; erect new buildings including City Hall;and fund many other projects which continue into our present day Johnsonston achieved international fame for having been home to America’s first television camera system operated from 1945-1946
