The Johnston, Iowa Army National Guard unit has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 1800's. The unit was organized on November 1, 1851 as the 4th Regiment of Infantry. It was named in honor of General William Johnston who served in the Mexican-American War and then played an important role in the Civil War. The regiment fought at Antietam, Gettysburg, and Fair Oaks before being disbanded on September 25, 1865. Since its disbandment, the Johnston Army National Guard has produced several distinguished members including: Lieutenant Colonel J.H.Crawford (Retired), Major General John P. Beebe ( Retired), Colonel James M. O'Brien ( Retired), Major General Leroy Kapp ( Retired) and Captain Jack Sorenson (Retired). In addition to their military careers, these individuals have also enjoyed various other professional accomplishments such as serving as County Clerk for Johnston County from 1974 until his retirement in 1998; Mayor of Johnston from 1998 until 2003; Governor of Iowa from 2003 until 2007; and finally Mayor of Des Moines from 2007 until his death in 2017.

Johnston was founded in 1857 by Colonel James Johnston, a Confederate soldier and Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. The town was named after the general, who had led the Iowa Cavalry in the Battle of Gettysburg. In 1870, Johnston became the first county seat of Johnson County.
Johnston, Iowa is a small town located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. Johnston was founded in 1854 by John Johnston and his wife Catharine. Johnston's father had come to the United States from Ireland and started a farm near present-day Johnston on the Missouri River. Johnston also took up farming in nearby Marshalltown and built a log cabin there in 1855. In 1860, he moved to what is now Johnston and started out raising beef cattle. He also raised hogs andeventually became one of the largest pork producers in eastern Iowa. By 1871, Johnston had two stores and about 20 residents. In 1875, he built a schoolhouse which still stands today; it served as the town library until 1961 when it was replaced by the present library building. In 1902, John Aiken bought 100 acres of land east of town for $10 per acre which he eventually developed into an agricultural park that includes more than 30 farms including many with corn allergies or corn intolerances that are still operation today! The park has been home to many large events over the years such as state fairs (now held at Lucas Oil Stadium) and World Expo '88 (held at Des Moines). In 1929, Lula Mae Cook founded her first grocery store on Main Street in Johnston; it was called "The Mrs." Cook Store until 1957 when she changed its name to "Dixie Grocery". She continued to run her store until her death in 1984. Today Dixie Grocery is operated by her son Donny Cook who purchased it from his mother's estate in 2007. The current library building was designed by local architect Wojciech Szpakowski who also designed several other facilities including First National Bank Building (1934), Reynolds Drug Store (1940), Town Hall (1978), Pella Methodist Church (1979) and now Americanseedbank Arena (2018). The cornerstone for this new building was laid on November 4th, 2018 by Mayor Steve King with participation from U2 frontman Bono!
When the United StatesArmy was created in 1776, there was not a single gift program like today's. In 1814, Major General Winfield Scott presented to the Continental Army a set of pistols that had been made in England by King George III. The guns were inscribed with the motto "United we stand" and became known as the "Scott pistol." This marked the first time that gift programs like those present today had been instituted within the United States Military. During World War II (1939-1945), soldiers received various types of gifts such as radios and automobiles from various manufacturers. In addition, commanders gave gifts such as cigarettes and cigars to their troops on occasions such as Christmas or Easter. Johnston was founded in 1855 by Daniel Johnston and his family. The community is located in Johnson County, Iowa, along the Missouri River. It is named after Daniel Johnston, a U.S. Senator from Kentucky who helped to secure passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act in 1854. Johnston built a mill on the river and opened it for business in 1857. In 1865, he sold his interest in the mill and moved to Nebraska where he began farming. He served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War and died at age 94 years old in 1925. The community of Johnston was founded on July 3, 1855 by Daniel Johnston and his family consisting of six children: Sarah (1850-1935), John (1851-1937), James W., Jr.* (1853-1938), Elizabeth (1856-1945), Daniel B.* (1858-1924) and Eunice M.* (1860-1945). The town was named after Senator Daniel Johnston who played a important role during the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed section 3 of the Kansas Constitution that prohibited slavery within state borders. Senator Johnston travelled to Great Britain to secure passage of this bill which ended slavery throughout all of Kansas including Johnson County where he lived with his father until his death on February 13th, 1855 aged only 39 years old††*. AfterSenator Johnston's death, his widow Sarah took over running their household until her son John becameGovernor of Iowa on December 4th 1888 when first ladies were no longer allowed to hold public office†‡* *. On January 6th 1889 Mrs Sarah married George Wickerham* (*Died 1886) who had been elected Mayor of Dubuque, Iowa less than two months earlier†§*. When Mrs Wickerham learned that she would be unable to serve due to her husband's death she resigned from her mayoral post effective March 1st 1889‡§*. From then until Mr Wickerham's resignation effective May 15th 1893Mrs Sarah did all the housekeeping while John served as Governor which included managing all finances*, *Died 1886; § Died 1923
Johnston was founded in 1855 by John A. Johnston and his wife, Fannie. The town originally consisted of just a few log cabins and a small farmstead. However, the Johnston family quickly built up a large business in agricultural products and real estate. In 1916, Johnston became an incorporated city with a population of around 100 people. By the early 1970s, the city had grown to over 1,200 residents. Today, Johnston is one of the more popular small towns in Iowa with its friendly community feel and rich history.
