The Iowa Air National Guard's 313th Airlift Squadron is responsible for providinglift support for the Johnston Municipal Airport. The squadron has been stationed at the airport since its construction in 1945. In that time, it has grown and changed a great deal. One of the most recent changes to the squadron came when it was activated as a component of Operation Noble Eagle, which aimed to provide airlifting support for troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. During Operation Noble Eagle, the 313th Airlift Squadron had two roles: transports and cargo haulers. As transports, they flew both C-5 Galaxy aircraft and C-130J Hercules planes from Johnston. Their missions were critical during this time; without their lift support, ground forces would have had to rely on helicopters or other means of transportation to get them where they needed to go. Cargo haulers were different though. They didn't fly any planes; instead, they acted as mobile landing pads for military vehicles such as Abrams tanks and Humvees. This allowed troops on the ground to move around more freely without having to worry about getting bogged down in traffic or fighting traffic conditions while trying to get back home. It was an important role during Operation Noble Eagle; without it, many soldiers would have hadto wait hours or even days before they could be transported back home safely. Today, the 313th Airlift Squadron still provides Lift Support at Johnston Municipal Airport; however, their primary role now is cargo transport along with some occasional flights into town for local events or demonstrations. Throughout its history, the 313th Airlift Squadron has been a vital part of Iowa's Air National Guard community and has played an instrumental role in ensuring that Johnston remains one of Iowa's top airports today!

Grant's transfer from Army leadership to Navy command effective February 15th 1942 so that Admiral Chester Nimitz could lead Allied forces in a planned amphibious assault on Guam which would become one of history's largest amphibious landings ever attempted
