There is no one specific time period when the Iowa National Guard was in existence, but it is safe to say that the guard has been present in various forms since at least 1892. In that year, the Iowa General Assembly passed a resolution recognizing the need for a national guard and appropriated $5,000 to establish the guard in order to protect state institutions. The first members of the Iowa National Guard were sworn in on November 17th, 1892. Throughout its history, theIowa National Guard has played an important role in both local and national events. Some of the most notable instances where the Iowa National Guard was called into action include Operation Red Arrow (1957), which saw involvement by both Iowa’s military and law enforcement agencies; Operation Neptune’s Spear (1979), which resulted in over 100 soldiers being killed during a military mission against Nicaragua; andOperation Protective Edge (2015), which involved support from more than 60 different units across 10 states during Israel’s invasion of Gaza. The Iowa National Guard was organized on November 8, 1863, in Iowa City. The first officers were Majors John A. Fenton and J. H. Pogue. The Guard began its service on April 14, 1864, at the town of Burlington. As the Civil War ended, the Guard was mustered out on July 26, 1865. It reverted to statehood on January 1, 1866.
