In 1855, the Iowa City Marine Corps was organized and began its first deployment in the war with Mexico. From that time on, Marines have been deployed to every conflict in which our country has been engaged. The Marines of Iowa City are proud to commemorate their history by hosting a traditions event each year for the Marine Corps Birthday. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, July 26th from 10am-4pm at the IWCOE gymnasium in downtown Iowa City. This annual celebration features live music from local bands and a variety of activities for Marines and their families including golfing, swimming, fishing, and more. In addition to traditional gifts such as birthday cake or flowers, Marines also receive unique items as part of this special occasion. Iowa City is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is the county seat of Johnson County and was founded on November 3, 1846, by James K. Polk as the town of Cedar Rapids. The population was estimated to be 100,000 in 2010, making it the third-largest city in Iowa by population after Des Moines and Dubuque. The city was named for President George Washington Carver who visited the area during his presidency. The first elementof Iowa City's name may be traced back to 1847 when General Simon Wayne arrived there with 1,500 men from Illinois to survey a route for a new railroad across central Iowa. He named the area Cedar Rapids because of its many cedar trees that had been cut down near his camp site on the Iowa River bank. In 1855, Cedar Rapids became an incorporated municipality and adopted a flag which featured a white doves perched atop a blue field with green leaves below; this design is still seen today on some municipal buildings downtown (e.g., City Hall). Cedar Rapids grew rapidly due to its location at the center of what would become one of America's largest wagon drives - known as "The Great Western Road" - that connected western New Mexico and eastern Kansas during the early 19th century; agriculture became Iowa City's mainstay and remains its primary economic focus today. According to Federal Reserve Bank analysis released in December 2009, although small size does not seem to have affected growth rate much over time ($10 million vs $135 million), "the fact that [Iowan] cities continue to grow even as their populations shrink may reflect unusual differences among Iowans themselves: smaller families living more closely together lead generally less dense lives than do larger families." In 1907–08 voters approved an ordinance allowing liquor sales outdoors without prior written consent from local authorities; this led to rapid growth in prostitution within Cedar Rapids' limits since then dubbed "The dives". This period also saw significant development within Interstate Highway 20 outside Ia-cities limits – including desegregation of public transportation services along that highway – which has helped contribute significantly (albeit indirectly)to recent gentrification around those areas throughout Ames/Waterloo/Davenport etc.; currently only two blocks east of Ia-city Limits lies one continuous high school/university campus flanked by several strip malls complete with housing developments serving mostly low-income residents
