When Kansas Territory was formed from Nebraska Territory on May 24, 1849, much of present-day Iowa City land became part of Kansas Territory. The arrival of prosperous grain farmers during the 1850s led to an increase in population by about 50%. In 1854, Congress passed a bill creating Des Moines County and giving its land east of State Street to that county for new townships (now neighborhoods). Iowa City voted to join Des Moines County on July 1, 1855; however, because it lay within old Douglas County (later Buena Vista), it was not included until December 30th when a act incorporating all townships within Douglas County created Iowa City as an incorporated town with full powers under state law. In 1870, John Fenton built what would become known as Fenton Tower which still stands today as one of downtown's most valuable properties - originally purchased for $1 million dollars! One year later, grain elevator operator Samuel Prentice donated his equipment lot on Market Street for use as a ground level public square where people could picnic and buy goods from local merchants while watching transportation activity out their window; this area became known as "Prentice Plaza." The fall season saw increased traffic due to tourists visiting attractions like Drake University and Wells Fargo & Co.'s new building at Third and Market Streets; this caused streetcars to be replaced by railroad cars which made getting around town much easier for everyone involved! In 1893 bricklayer John Ladd built One block north along Second Avenue from Main Street eastward towards Union Park - now called "Ladd Square". On November 9th that year voters approved a referendum seeking incorporation into the city limits – but because it lacked enough registered voters (only 2% were voting), incorporation never took place! In 1898 two brothers named George Hesseltine developed corn oil interests near what is now Downtown IA CITY – these assets would eventually produce 3 Nobel Prizes including one awarded jointly to Henry Molnar and Alfred Stroudman – both residents of Rochester NY at that time! grocer Clarence King founded King Bros grocery store where he sold groceries door-to-door before opening his own store on Grand Avenue west side in 1922; this business would eventually grow into one of downtown's most popular stores! Not content with living close to nothing while other businesses flourished down South they started moving up here also starting their own hardware store next door at Fourth and Walnut streets back then – resulting in today's most wellknown Hardware Store located just south off Iavenue between Eberhardt Place & Fifth Streets!
