The Iowa City Army Post Office is one of the oldest military posts in Iowa. It was established on Feb. 14, 1851 as Fort Frederick,Iowa and it became the 1st Cavalry Regiment Armory on July 1, 1861. The post was renamed Fort Douglas on Dec. 17, 1865 and then the 1st Infantry Regiment Armory on Jan. 6, 1887. On Nov. 10th 1912 an armory was dedicated at the old First National Bank site in downtown Iowa City to commemorate army gift history in that city dating back to 1851-1887. From 1912-1994 there were five armories located within the city limits of Iowa City: First National Bank Site (now Fort Douglas), Second National Bank Site (now Drake University), Third National Bank Site (now Central State College), Fourth National Bank Site (now UIUC) and Fifth NationalBank Site (now UIHC). The Iowa City Army Post Office was established in 1876. In 1942, the post office became the Iowa City Air Force Base. The base closed in 1992 and the post office moved to its present location in 1996.

After France lost their claim to Louisiana following War for Independence, American settlers began arrive here from New England throughout most of 1803 until Dodge donated land northeast of town to establish an agricultural society known as Drake Farm which became home to about 60 Americans by 1810 when John Swayne arrived with his group from New York State looking for land west of rapids on the Missouri River near present day Cedar Rapids On October 15th 1818 while under way from St Louis via Council Bluffs downriver they met 640 Native Americans who were meeting at Saco Bayou east of present day Coralville where they agreed not to fight against British forces under General Simon Legree if General United States Army Lieutenant Colonel JamesAW Powell could take control and lead them into battle Creek Indians had been attacking white settlements along both sides of the river since 1794 attempts by local leaders like Tecumseh led by Chief O'Brien had failed until Powell arrived with 3 Companies under his command after hearing reports over his horse’s back that 700 Native Americans were living southward near Prairie du Chien just abovepresent day Dubuque After reaching council Bluffs early next morning on October 16th Powell sent Lieutenant Colonel James Webb with 4 companies upstream along bluffs called Fort Dearborn across Big Sioux River opposite mouth of Little Sioux River leading upriver past current day Waterloo Junction then downstream past present day Burlington before turning northwesterly across White Sands Lake then following route taken today by US Highway 6 toward Cedar Rapids
