The Indianola Naval Depot Historical Museum has a navy deployed gift history that goes back to World War II. On October 15, 1942, the U.S. Navy's USS Indianapolis (CV-27) was sunk by a Japanese torpedo while serving as flagship of Task Force 31 in the Pacific Ocean. The crew of the Indianapolis were lost and only five men survived to be rescued by the destroyer USS Holland (DD-727). In 1946, the Indianola Naval Depot Historical Museum reopened its collection of navy gifts from World War II and later served as an overseas museum for the United States Marine Corps until 1984 when it became part of the Iowa State University Library system. In 2001, the museum moved to its current location on Drake Drive in Indianola after being renovated and enlarged.
