Military gift history in Indianola, Iowa begins with thecession of Iowa by the United States on July 8, 1846. The Territory of Iowa was organized from parts of Illinois and Missouri on June 20, 1847. At that time the U.S. Army had only 4 companies stationed in what is now Iowa. The first military gift to arrive in town was an American flagpole from Major General Winfield Scott’s army at Fort Snelling on August 11, 1847. The soldiers stationed in Indianola brought many gifts with them when they arrived including cannons, rifles, ammunition and other items necessary for war. One soldier even left behind a horse and saddle! Gifts continued to arrive until around 1865 when all military units were disbanded in Kansas and Nebraska as part of the Compromise of 1850. This left Indianola with no Military presence whatsoever! In 1907, the Village of Indianola erected a historical marker to remember those who have come before them for military service or local support during the Great Sioux War (1876-1888). That same year also saw the dedication of a new base hospital located at Fort Snelling which would become one of the largest hospitals in America during World War I. In 1934, another Historical marker was dedicated to recognize Soldiers Killed In Action during World War II at nearby Camp Shelby National Cemetery where over 60% of all USAAF killed members are buried!
