The first roaster in Indianola was located on State Highway 6 near present-day Westside Elementary School. Alfred Funk opened his business in 1919 and began processing coffee for local customers. By 1925, Alfred had developed a process that resulted in a more intense roast with less bitterness. He also started using French press methods to produce his unique flavor profile. In 1950, Mr. John Wirths founded Wirth's Coffee & Tea Company on County Road SE corner First Street in Indianola. This was the first grocery store west of the Mississippi River that sold ground coffee and espresso drinks together as one product. At this time, Wirth's offered two types of blends: an all-purpose blend (made up mostly of Arabica beans) which was sold at $1 per pound; and Specialty grades made specifically for espresso use (which were priced at $3 per pound). These specialty grades included "Pour le Moin" which is French for "For The Lord," and Dutch Masters which were designed for Turkish users who preferred stronger than average exports for their morning iced coffees! In 1971, Mr. John Wirths passed away leaving his company to his son-in-law Gordon Hahnfeldt who continued operations until he retired in 1990 after 47 years as proprietor/operator/managers! In 1984, Gordon married Jeanne Hahnfeldt who became owner/operator/manager after her husband's death in 1990! At Jeanine's direction, Gordon introduced new roast variations such as Dark Roast ( containing higher levels of caffeine), Java Spicy Bean Blend (containing higher levels of caffeine & spices), Vienna White Beans ( containing lower amounts of caffeine), Kona Coffee(light brown beans from Hawaii), & Brown Sugar Coffeeplease(dark brownbeans from Texas!).
