Indianola is a small town located in Polk County, Iowa, on the banks of the Des Moines River. The population was 9,527 as of 2000. It lies within the Chicago-Naperville-Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Indianola were farmers who arrived around 1837. By 1859, there were three stores and twelve homes in Indianola. In 1865, when Ulysses S Grant became President of the United States, he designated Indianola as site of an experimental cotton gin project under Secretary of War Edwin Stanton’s leadership. The venture failed but furnished muchneeded evidence demonstrating America’s commitment to cotton production during Reconstruction Era times. After Stanton’s death in office in 1868, responsibility for this particular experiment passed to James Gadsden Sr., a Representative from Alabama who also served as Acting Secretary of War under Andrew Johnson until September 1870 when Johnson took office as President Ulysses S Grant’s Vice Presidential nominee following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination on April 12th that year events led to Grant becoming Commander-in-Chief with authority over all military forces including those operating within Confederate controlled areas including Indiaoland where he had been working since March 4th fortifying what remained loyal Union troops). In order for Grant to take full control over all aspects of American cotton production after Lincoln’s death he assigned General Philip Sheridan commandant general duty over all American forces inside Confederate controlled territory effective October 1st 1871 (the same day Sherman announced his march against Atlanta Georgia beginning on December 15th). This move effectively ended Reconstruction era efforts by both parties at home and abroad to negotiate peace terms resulting in years long war which ultimately ended with America gaining total victory over Confederacy

The town was named for John C.Indianola, a settler who had come to the area in 1839. At first, the town consisted of only a few homes and a store. In 1850, Indianola also became home to its own school district. By 1870, however, the population of Indianola had grown to over 100 people. The town started out as an agricultural community and grew into a manufacturing center during the early 1800s. In addition to manufacturing goods such as shoes and wagon parts, Indianola also produced lumber and other materials used by farmers throughout Iowa and Illinois. During World War I, Indianola played an important role in supplying munitions for the war effort. In 1919-1920, Indianola built two industrial plants – one producingAutomobiles and another producing munitions called “Tigers” which were designed to penetrate enemy trenches
In 1854, the first white person to live in Indianola was James H. Smith. In 1881, the town had a population of around 100 people and began to boom with businesses starting up such as a flour mill, bakery, grocery store, post office and hotel. By 1907, the population had reached over 500 people and continued to grow until World War II when it plummeted to just 50 people due to the war effort. The town slowly began to rebound after that time with annexation by neighboring Muscatine in 1957 and then by Cedar Rapids in 1979. Today, Indianola has a population of around 350 people and is home to several business districts including the downtown area which is home to several shops and restaurants as well as a library.
