Indianola, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, located on the Des Moines River. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Indianola was founded in 1855 by James Sibley and his family as a small community on the banks of the river. It became an agricultural center during the early years of what is now Iowa, and then began to grow rapidly after railroads arrived in the early 20th century. In 1924, Indianola became one of four towns in Webster County when that county was created from part of Crawford County. The city's growth accelerated following World War II as manufacturing left downtown for suburban locations around race tracks and other industrial sites outside town limits. The city has experienced several cycles of economic prosperity and decline over its history, but it has always been an important cultural and commercial center for central Iowa since its founding. The current incarnation of Indianola began to emerge in earnest during the late 20th century as a result of legacies left by previous mayors John Denton and Fred Noonan, who both served terms from 1961 to 1984). Denton's vision for expanding local services while still cultivating downtown culture led to creation of many iconic moments within Indianola's history including the first NCAA men’s basketball championship game played at Municipal Stadium (then known as Veterans Memorial Coliseum) in 1967; passage of legislation authorizing development along State Highway 1 south of town; initial construction phases associated withIowa State University’s arrival; and numerous other landmark moments throughout the decades – all while working collaboratively with neighboring cities through various partnerships and collaborations such asthe CentralIA Metropolitan Planning Organization (CIMPO). Indianola began as a small settlement in 1851, when the Iowa Territorial Legislature approved plans to create a town on the eastern edge of what is now Indianola. The first settler arrived in 1852, and the town was formally organized in 1853. Indianola grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as entrepreneurs developed new businesses in the town's commercial district. By 1870, Indianola had a population of nearly 100 people. In 1871, the Townshend Agreement created an agricultural society to provide support for growing crops and livestock in the town. The society successfully managed land holdings that contributed to Indianola's success over time. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law The National Defense Act which provided for military training and equipment donations from America's allies. This event led to increased activity in Indianola as businesses turned to produce weapons for American service members. On July 4th, 1918, World War I veteran Samuel Pappenheimer died at age 85 after years of illness at his home in Indianola. Pappenheimer was one of Indiaola's most prominent citizens and had played an important role in developing its economy and culture
