The town developed around the trading post known as "The Gulls Nest." In 1875, the Post Office Department moved to what is now downtown Indianola and changed its name to "Indianola" after the town's founder, James Fenton Indianola. At present, there are only a few businesses remaining from when Indiansola had a population of 1,500 people. One of the most significant events during the early years of Indianola was the building of US 60 which ran through town and linked Cedar Rapids with Dubuque (then Davenport) via this trading post.
