The Indianola Army Deployed Gift History starts with the first military gift in 1922 when Captain R.H. Smith of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, United States Army donated a bottle of wine to the local library. In 1942, General George S. Patton gave a duffel bag filled with equipment and clothes to the soldiers of Company C, 1st Cavalry Regiment as a Christmas present. The gift has continued on throughout history with many other donations and expressions of love by members of the armed forces. Today, Indiaola is home to over 3,000 active duty military members and their families who contribute invalids care, education and recreation for all citizens in our community. The Iowa National Guard was activated on October 1, 1916 in Indianola. The unit remained inactive until 1917. On December 4, 1917 the Iowa National Guard's first unit deployed to World War I as part of the US Expeditionary Force. The brigade served with distinction and returned home on April 10, 1919. In 1924, theIowa National Guard's 2nd Brigade was organized and raised in Indianola. In 1941, the 3rd Brigade wasraised and deployed to Europe where it foughtroversy near Dunkirk beach during World War II. After the war ended,the brigade returned to Iowa City in 1946 and disbanded that year. In 1959-1960 a 1st Brigade was raised in Sioux City for deployment to Vietnam; this brigade never deploysed however it remains an honorable member of the Iowa National Guard history books

Indianola is part of the Des Moines-Eagles Nest, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. The original settler were French Canadians who arrived in 1846. early settlers included Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, Mormons and Germans.
