In 1853, Fort Madison was again renamed for General James K. Polk, and it continued to serve as a military post until 1865. After that, it served as an agricultural center and later became a commercial community. The town developed primarily around the flour mill and other rural businesses that operated in the area. The town also grew up around religious services held at the nearby Methodist church and the local cemetery. Today, Fort Madison is a small village located northeast of Cedar Rapids on state highway 14A. It has a population of about 100 people and is home to several businesses, including a grocery store and two banks. Fort Madison’s history began with its construction in 1837 as part of President Andrew Jackson’s effort to protect both Iowa River crossings and western Kansas from Indian attack. The fort was designed by Lt. Colonel George Hennepin and Drury Latham, who had responsibility for commanding all US military posts west of Missouri River during Jackson’s presidency. This led to increased patrols by garrison troops throughout town . In 1850 FtMadison received new arms which consisted of cannons(6 pounder rifles)and 2 6 inch rifled pistols being installed overlooking present day Main Street
