The Marine Corps Deployed Gift History Program is designed to collect and store donated items from the Marines who have served in the United States. The program began in Fort Madison, Iowa in 1978 and has since grown to include installations all over the world. The program also allows Marines to connect with other Marines through gift exchange programs and other events. The original fort was built in 1846 by Ulysses S. Grant as a military outpost on the border of Missouri and Iowa to prevent Native American attacks on both states. The new fort was completed in 1866 and served as a base for troops during the Civil War and later as a supply depot for the Union army. In 1915, Fort Madison became an important training center for World War I troops before becoming an agricultural town after World War II. On July 30, 1802, the U.S. Marines stationed at Portsmouth, England opened their gift shop in honor of Commodore John Rodgers and his command of the British forces in America during the War of 1812. The shop was called Marine Gifts. Marine Gifts became an important part of marine culture and continues to be a popular source for soldiers and sailors alike today. Today, Marine Gifts is a family-owned business with 12 employees located in Portsmouth, England and Rhode Island. The store specializes in maritime gifts such as flagships, masts, anchors, ship models and more. In addition to its unique selection of items related to the military industry, Marine Gifts also offers educational materials about naval history and coastaldefense techniques. The Store’s Story began on July 30th with a shipment of flagships from Portsmouth Harbor to New York City! Commodore Rodgers had ordered 50 flagships for use by His Majesty’s Navy during the course of the war against American patriots! Each flagship was handcrafted from heavy oak timbers and featured copper gilded hardware. The ships were an important part of British naval strategy during the war and are still used today as tourist attractions in London’s Docklands area

Fort Madison was founded in 1812 by General James Clarke and the Sac and Fox Indians. The fort was manned by about 100 soldiers, with a detachment of about 25 mounted officers. It was located on the Mississippi River at what is now Fort Madison, Iowa. The fort was abandoned in 1825, and most of its equipment and buildings were destroyed in a fire that burned for two days. The fortification at Fort Madison served as an important base of operations during the Indian Wars between 1812-1815. In 1816, the United States acquired land east of Fort Madison near modern-day Sioux City, Iowa to build a military post known as Camp Dodge. In 1830, Congress passed a bill authorizing the erection of another military post on lands east of Fort Dodge. The new post would be called Fort Madison and it would include a battery capable of firing cannon into the Missouri River. In 1836, General Winfield Scott ordered construction began on what would become Capitol Hill Cemetery in honor of his predecessor as commander in chief, Ulysses S. Grant. Work started on Capitol Hill Cemetery on November 11th, 1836 and ended up taking three years due to difficulty getting funding from both state legislatures and Washington D.C.. By October 1st, 1840 all graves had been completed except for one which still needed to be cut down to make way for the new Capitol building which had just been erected across Interstate 35W from Capitol Hill Cemetery. The first victim of Civil War戦争 in Iowa was Private John Pappenheimer who died while serving under Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest near Cedar Rapids on May 26th 1862; Pappenheimer is buried at Corinth National Military Park south side lot #527-A1R2 (Possibly section 527/A1R2). On September 17th 1863 Union general George Armstrong Custer killed four troopers guarding supply trains along Buffalo Creek west of Cedar Rapids when he mistakenly thought they were Confederates; Custer is buried nearby at West Point National Military Park (west side lot #4688) . On April 12th 1865 – less than two weeks after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination – Union general Ulysses S., Grant ordered his troops to storm Independence Mall in Philadelphia after learning that Confederate forces were planning an attack; only 46 people survived when 207 gates opened simultaneously resulting in more than $3 million worth damage done . One soldier who did not participate in this raid is also buried nearby at Fairmount Cemetery northwest corner Lot 910E (north side facing Fairmount Avenue) - Private First Class Levi Coffin who died while serving with Company K 3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment
The first settlers in Fort Madison were the Mennonites who came in 1836. The fort was built to protect the town from Sioux Indians, and it was used until 1861. In that year, Iowa Territory was created and Fort Madison became its capital. The territory included all of present-day Iowa and many of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The residents of Fort Madison were divided between Iowa Territory and the new state of Des Moines. The fort fell into disrepair soon after it was built, so in 1864 it was replaced by a new fort called Ft. Dodge on the same site.
