Richardson started traded coffee with Brazil for goods such as flour and bacon. At first, Richardson’s coffee beans were sold only to local merchants in Fort Dodge. However, by 1870, Richardson had moved his business out of state and started selling his coffee throughout Iowa and Illinois. By 1888, Richardson had opened a large warehouse in Council Bluffs that became known as the “Grand Old House of Coffee” because it housed many different types of equipment used in coffee production including roasters, grinders, brewers and tastemakers. During this time period, Fort Madison also became home to one of the largest bean-roasting operations in the country (renowned for their Maduro beans). The Richardsons roasted 500 acres of beans each year at their warehouse until 1906 when they closed down due to health concerns about their roastees’ exposure to harmful chemicals during processing. Today there are still smallholders roasting beans on a small scale near Fort Madison from time to time.

The first permanent settler in what is now Fort Madison was Peter McCoy in 1854. In 1856, Captain John Prentice bought land from the Sac and Fox Nation for $1,000. He developed it into a small town with a post office and store. The first school was built in 1870 by David Johnson and opened to students on October 26th. The first doctor in Fort Madison was Dr. George Henniker who arrived on April 15th, 1872. In 1886, the US government purchased much of present-day Fort Madison from the Sac and Fox Nation for $715 per acre (the same amount that had been paid for land by Captain Prentice). The area became known as Camp Dodge or Indian Territory because no white people lived there until after World War II when whites began moving into this area to develop new farms around Sioux City and Amesbury Township. The first settlers of Fort Madison arrived around 1820, when Captain John Smith built a log cabin on what is now farmstead #1 near present-day Fort Madison Boulevard. In 1830, Captain Thomas Hickey erected a dam across the Iowa River at what is now farmstead #2 to create water storage capacity for his new settlement. By 1836, there were six families living at Fort Madison and growing crops and raising livestock on what is now Farmstead #3. In 1837, General James K Polk ordered Colonel Thomas Benton to build an occupation force at FortMadison under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer; this force included 5th Cavalry Regiment led by Major Patrick Kennedy and 2nd Infantry Regiment led by Colonel Edward Payson Banks (future governor of Iowa). On November 15, 1837, about 150 men from units commanded by Benton crossed the river into Missouri Territory under cover of darkness; they were later joined by another 500 men from Georgia Volunteers under Lieutenant Colonel David Hunter Ewing arriving November 16th following route marches through Council Bluffs On December 1st, General Polk issued orders authorizing the use of cannons “for some temporary exhibitions upon public occasions” This display came to be known as “The Battle of Clear Creek” which lasted ten hours starting at Noon on December 2nd with intermittent gunfire from both sides followed soon thereafter by orderlies giving signals for withdrawal Aftermath: Casualties: 8 killed including brigadier general James K Polk himself & Lt Col George Armstrong Custer commanding 5th Cav Regt & Capt Patrick Kennedy commanding 2 Inf Regt // commander Benton awarded Medal Of Honor posthumously
