At that time, Fort Madison was a small town with only a few businesses.Simon and Schuster roast their own coffee, which is sold to local cafes and restaurants. In 1916, Mr. and Mrs. John Witherspoon opened the first grocery store in Fort Madison, which became the district's mainstay for food. They also operated a bakery and candy store on North Main Street until it closed in 1969. In 1978, Leo Bersani started his own coffee business at 1116 N First St., which continues to serve as the town's primary source of fresh roasted coffee today.
