At first, coffee was brewed for sale to farmers and their families on the farmstead. By the mid-19th century, however, coffee had spread throughout Iowa due to its high quality and unique flavor. In 1867, Fort Madison residents founded their own coffee shop, which quickly became a popular spot for local residents to enjoy a morning cup of Joe. Over time, the coffee shop grew into one of the biggest and most influential in town. During its years as a business, the coffee shop developed a rich history that is still celebrated today. One of the earliest pioneers in Fort Madison was J.H. Hatton who began roasting beans in 1858. The early days were difficult for Hatton because he needed access to fresh beans from all over Iowa and Illinois to keep hisshop afloat. However, through hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, he eventually became an accomplished roaster and businessman. In 1870, he opened his second store in Fort Madison called The Coffee Shop & Bazaar which soon became known as one of the most popular spots for breakfast around town. The late 1800s were a time of great change in our city – with railroads coming into town and settlers moving into new homes across the state line – things were about to get much more interesting! In 1902, The Coffee Shop moved out of its original location on Third Street into what is now known as their current space on State Street downtown! At this point in time, they were one of only a few businesses left remaining within walking distance of both cultural attractions such as Des Moines State University (DSU) and downtown Ft Dodge! From here on out: things got crazy! In 1978-1979 The Coffee Shop underwent an extensive renovation that included new cockpits/mechanisms/lighting system; reupholstered leather chairs; beautiful stained glass windows; updated appliances including refrigerators (which we still use today); iced tea machines; vernacular artilingeniture (such as rocking chairs) etc.; !!! A whole lot more!!! Needless to say it wasn’t without some challenges but it was all worth it when we finally reopened our doors after 16 years!!!! The Fort Madison Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by John A. Beavers and W. H. Blackstock. The company became one of the most successful in the Midwest, becoming well-known for its distinctive coffee beans and roasted into quality products. In 1977, the company merged with two other businesses to become First National Fort Madison Coffee Company.

Fort Madison is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 746 at the 2010 census. Fort Madison was founded by the French in 1836 and named for Pierre-Charles de Montresor, who donated land to the United States for a military installation. It became an important commercial center during the late 19th century with its location on the Mississippi River as well as its railroad links. During World War II, Fort Madison played a significant role in providing supplies to British forces fighting in North Africa.

The history of artisan coffee goes back at least to when smallholder farmers began to roast their own beans in their homes. Over time these farmers' efforts led to different blends being developed based on specific region or country specifications. One such example is the Dahomey Special Reserve blend which was created in response to customer demand for a darker roast than what was available from larger commercial operations. This particular specialty blend features high levels of cocoa content as well as pieces of vanilla bean which give it a unique flavor profile not found in other artisanal coffees. Fort Madison was founded in 1833 by General George A. Smith and Major David Dixon as a military post on the Iowa River. It served as a garrison for the area until it was abandoned in 1836. The fortification was reactivated in 1847 and again abandoned in 1850, when the United States moved its capital from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. Fort Madison became an arsenal during the American Civil War, but it was never used as such and eventually closed down. It reopened in 1865 as a trading post before becoming a military installation again in 1868. In 1903, Fort Madison became part of the Iowa State University system and remains that way today.
