The Fort Madison Air Force Base is home to the Iowa Air National Guard's 190th Aerospace Defense Wing. The wing provides air defense for the state of Iowa and adjacent counties. Its mission is to provide protect our citizens, property, and airspace from terrorist threats by providing missile warning, fighter aircraft and other support services; conducting airborne training; and providing humanitarian assistance in times of emergency. The wing was activated on November 1, 1947 at Fort Madison as part of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). The wing's first assignment was flying reconnaissance missions over Germany during World War II. In 1949, the wing moved to RAF Lakenheath in England where it operated untilactivated on October 15, 1957. On its return to America it became a squadron level unit with base organization as follows: Headquarters North American Air Defense Command-1949-1957 On July 4, 1960 when NATO renamed itself "NATO" the 190th AESD was reassigned from USAFE to NATO under IADC command. On August 15th 1990 when USAFE disbanded all commands within NATO due to budget cuts IADC assumed operational control of the 190th AESD which had been stationed at Schleswig Flug GmbH AB since 1962. From there on until 1994 when IADC disbanded all commands again due to budgetary restraints we continued flying out of Schleswig Flug GmbH AB under III AFW/190A command which at that time also included Ft Hays AFB KS In 1996 when IADC abolished all commands once again due to budget restraints we reverted back back back to wings status with III AFW/190A command which now included Ft Hays AFB KS subordinate units ie: 191st Fighter Squadron & 192nd Fighter Squadron In 2002 after almost 25 years with II AFW/190B command we finally reactivated our original HQnorth american airdefensecommand unit at Mitchel Field NY while still subordinating my 191st FS & 192nd FS It should be noted that both HQ north american airdefensecommand units have since been reorganized into two single colonel led Units currently called 199TH AEWFC& 200TH AEWFC For many reasons including global peacekeeping deployments C-130J Hercules aircraft have beenDeployed twice from AFBMitchelFieldNYto deploy disaster relief ops in Haiti reconstruction following Hurricane Katrina served as Airlift Command Aircraft using Sioux City IA Municipal Airport KCI serving as an interim airport whileHCAs were being built at Mitchel FieldNY All told they have participated in 16 deployed deployments including 2 separate Operation Neptune Spear deployments both times utilizing their C-130Js equipped with Special Mission Units or SMU's This past year they Deployed 3 different types of Aircraft 7 different types total They will soon be retiring their last few airplanes however they will continue flying them until 2021

Fort Madison is located in Polk County, Iowa, and is the most northerly town in Iowa. The town was founded by General James K. Polk in 1855 as a military post on the Clearwater River. Fort Madison was renamed for United States President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. It became an important trading post and railroad center during the American Civil War. After the war, Fort Madison grew rapidly as a result of its strategic location and its role as a transportation hub for goods from eastern Iowa to Midwest Chicago. In 1970, Fort Madison's economy collapsed due to factors such as economic recession and social unrest; however, it has since recovered and is now one of the fastest-growing towns in Iowa. Founded by General James K. There is no doubt that the United States Air Force has been a major force in the world for many years. The USAF was founded on September 17, 1947 and initially consisted of only two squadrons: the 237th Bombardment Squadron and the 258th Bombardment Squadron. Over time, however, it grew to include more than 60 Squadrons across all wings. Today, the USAF operates over 150 aircraft types and employs over 1 million people worldwide. The USAF Deployed Gift History Program is one example of how the USAF keeps its members connected with their loved ones back home. This program allows service members and their families to send any items they may have acquired or used in service with the USAF directly to their family members or friends within 30 days of acquisition. Arnold Tomlinson was honored by Mrs. Ladd with an entire metal model airplane! Not only did this gift commemorate a significant event in LtCol Ladd’s life but it also highlighted how much support wife Dorothy had for her husband during his military career which spannedalmost 5 decades! The USAF deployed gift history in the early 1950s. The gift history was first used to celebrate Air Force Academy graduates. It was also used to congratulate other military branches and units on their successes during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Fort Madison was established in 1827 as the first permanent U.S. military post on the Iowa River. It served as a garrison for settlers and Indian traders until 1846, when it became the capital of Iowa Territory. The fort was renamed Fort Dodge in 1851 after General Simon Biddle, who played an important role in organizing the territory. In 1857, Fort Dodge was moved to what is now Des Moines and served as its new administrative center until 1898, when it was replaced by the current building at State Capitol Park. The fort’s history is full of heroism and tragedy: during the American Civil War, it played a critical role in providing defense against Confederate attack; following World War I, it saw service as a training ground for troops from all over America; and after Iowa became a state in 1912, Fort Dodge continued to play an important role in state government until its closure in 1978. Today, remnants of the fort are still visible throughout downtown Des Moines – one of only a few remaining examples of early American military architecture left in the city – and there are plans to renovate and reopen it as a museumurl Fort Madison’s story began with settler Captured Joe White’s arrival on October 10th, 1827 on horseback from Missouri City (now St Louis). Heading westward through present-day Polk County on his way to join up with other settlers traveling via wagon train led by Nathan Bedford Forrest (July 4th 1785-May 3rd 1865), White found himself alone on unmappedIowa soil Chaseblanketing winter temperatures below freezing each night while waiting for help that never came. White quickly organized his men into Company A under Captains Samuel Fisk (October 9th)and James Wilkinson (November 11th). Together they built some rudimentary defenses around their small encampment before turning their attention to pillaging Native Americans living nearby for food and materials needed for their journey westward. On December 2nd1827 company A discovered another group of Indians consisting of around fifty warriors camping near Council Bluffs along what is now Interstate 80 just east of present-day Waterloo Junction . Captain Wilkinson ordered his men not to fire upon these invaders but rather take them prisoner instead; this action helped set offa seriesof conflicts between white settlers and Native Americans that would eventually lead tocivil war In March 1830Captain Wilkinson discovered several caches of provisions including cannonsballs & shot (& 4000 lbs jerky) belongingthe Cheyenne Nation near Council Bluffs #1Cache #2Cache #3Cache #4 were located at creek crossing near present day West Branch Community College site Cache 5 located @ Waukee Creek bank Cache 6 @ East Creek Bank Site Captained Wilkinson abandoned company A march 21st 1830 due To bad weather condition Moving southwest towards Clearwater forks where he met Major John Drake & Major Robert Griggs rendezvous point which ended up being Rock Island creek
Fort Madison was founded in 1795 by Captain James Wilkinson and Major General David Dixon as a military post on the Iowa River. The fort was initially named for British general William Jenkins Fort, who had died in 1794. In 1802, the fort became known as Fort Madison after United States President Thomas Jefferson's wife, Martha Washington. The fort was redesignated as a U.S. Military prison in 1835 and again in 1865 following the American Civil War. It closed its doors in 1886 and is now a museum located within the Des Moines Historic District.
