Fort Dodge is a small town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,487 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Iowa City metropolitan area. Fort Dodge was founded in 1855 as a military post by General James K. Polk and his men during the Mexican-American War. The community was named for Confederate general John C. Frémont, who fought alongside General Polk in that war. The first post office was established in Fort Dodge on November 7, 1855, and opened under the name "Hancock." In 1858, it changed its name to "Ft Dodge" after Genl James K Polk's headquarters near Richmond Hill, Virginia. The post served as an arsenal until 1861 when it became a military garrison for Johnson County. In 1891 the fortifications were removed and replaced by a new courthouse with Gothic Revival style architecture designed by George Aiken and built on what is now State Street east of downtown Fort Dodge. That courthouse served as the seat of government for Johnson County until 1953 when it moved to Amesbury Township in northwestern Johnson County. During World War II Ft Dodge played an important role as an airfield serving both America First Bomber Command and Second Air Force operations over Europe and northern Africa; during peacetime Ft Dodge has been home to several businesses such as Adirondack Furniture & Home Depot., American Weighing House Inc., Chrysler Truck Parts & Accessories Inc., Ford Motor Co.'s Brady Division Local Service Department No 6444 (now known as FEI), JBL Radio Corp.; two elementary schools; one high school; three churches: First Methodist Church (1888), Presbyterian Church (1912), Evangelical Lutheran Church—USA (1946). Fort Dodge, Iowa was founded in 1847 as a military post on the Iowa River. It served as a garrison for the Santa Fe Trail and later became a center for fur trading. The fort was abandoned in 1855 and never reoccupied. Fort Dodge is now a museum located within the city of Des Moines. The first people to live in what is now Fort Dodge were the Menominee Indians. In 1827, they built a small village near the present-day commercial district of downtown Des Moines. They named their settlement after their patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi. The first European settler in Fort Dodge was Nicholas Goodrich, who arrived in 1848. He built his cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Goodrich's Landing. In 1850, Major General David Holmes moved his army from Council Bluff, Missouri to Ft Dodge to help build the Santa Fe Trail. Heading eastward from Laredo, Texas, the trail crossed under the Platte River at Ft Dodge before continuing northeastward overland through Kansas and Nebraska to Omaha Beach at Omaha, Nebraska. When finished, the Santa Fe Trail joined up with Indian trails leading eastward into Mexico and westward into Oregon and California settlements respectively. The fort at Ft Dodge served as an garrison for many years until it was abandoned in 1855 due to lack of defense against wagon trains traveling along the route between Minnesota and California Then Fort Dodge reverted back to being an agricultural outpost until it closed its doors forever in 1967 when it merged with neighboring Ames City into Des Moines proper
