The Fort Dodge Naval Shipyard, located in the heart of downtown Fort Dodge, was built in 1892 to build the USS Iowa. The shipyard was closed in 1972 and its land sold to the city of Des Moines. In 1984, the navy's Second Fleet moved into the shipyard and it reopened as a naval installation. It is now home to both the Marine Corps Reserve Forces Command and Navy Reserve Center. The fort also houses a museum that tells the history of naval warfare in Iowa from before World War II through present day.
