The community was founded in 1866 as a trading post on the Missouri River by Major James B. Hinds and Captain John C. Smith. Fort Dodge grew rapidly due to its location between two strategic rivers and its position as the junction of several trails that connected the Great Lakes region with eastern Kansas and Missouri. In 1892, Fort Dodge became an official post of the United States Army during World War I when it was renamed Fort Riley after General George Custer's death in battle at Little Big Horn. The post served as a training ground for American soldiers until 1918 when it was decommissioned and sold off to private individuals. The fortifications at Fort Dodge were important during the Mexican–American War because they protected the town and its strategic location on the Mississippi River between Mexico and Texas. The fortifications were also important for military purposes after the war, when Fort Dodge became a depot for supplies coming down the river. The fortifications at Fort Dodge were destroyed by fire in 1869, but they were rebuilt and used until 1865 when they were abandoned again. The ruins of the fort are now visible along State Highway 22 near West Des Moines.
