The Iowa Army National Guard's unit history can be traced back to 1849. At that time, the First Regiment of Iowa Volunteers was organized at Fort Dodge, and was called the Second Battalion of volunteers. The battalion numbered 27 men and served in the Mexican-American War as part of a brigade under General George Armstrong Custer. In 1865, the Second Regiment of Iowa Volunteers was reorganized into a regiment and redesignated as Infantry Battalion A in time for the American Civil War. The battalion fought in Confederate service until its disbandment in 1865. The regiment's soldiers were mustered out on May 10, 1865, at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The regiment's officers and men received their military insignia from Governor David Dudley Smith on July 4th, 1865. Upon their dismission from the army they were given their new insignia which consisted of a blue sleeve meaner than shoulder board with whiteSEEKING STAR above it; black pants with brass buttons; a white belt with bronze Buckminster Fuller Eagle button;US Cavalry hat (dated 1863);and US Infantry sword (dated 1861). Iowa veterans who served during World War I received their medals and awards at an early date. Units that had been activated for duty during World War I were mustered into service on October 15th, 1917 by orderof then President Woodrow Wilson. On November 8th, 1917 these units began training at Camp Dodge where they would later deploy to France as part of VIII Corps between September 1918-March 1919 based out of Arras Cathedral near Amiens airfield near Paris/Le Mans Airport vicinity which is located today close to Stade de France or Gare du Nord Train Station area just southwest side off Eighty Sixth Street North street very close to Bormes les Moulins water tower . Units Deployed: 1st Brigade (IV Corps), 2nd Brigade (III Corps), 3rd Brigade (I Corps) On March 6th 1919 infantry battalions A1-A3 reported for deployment overseas following orders received from III Corps commander Major General John J Pershing ordering them "to attack unopposed all along our front" when he learned about American successes against German forces in Belgium since Armistice Day 1918 including breakthroughs at Mons and Tournai . From there operations escalated into what became known as Battle Backward which lasted until April 9th when III Corps offensive finally halted northeast of Le Mans due toGerman counterattack spearheaded by Obersturmfuehrer Wilhelm Keitel resulting in high casualties among both Allies and Axis personnel amounting to over 50% killed or wounded according to one source cited In total more than 350 Americans died or went missing making this one of America’s bloodiest wars
