The Iowa Air National Guard's 2nd Bomb Wing, part of the United States Air Force, flies Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers. The wing is made up of two squadrons: The 1st Bomb Squadron and the 2nd Bomb Squadron. The wing has received many airforce gifts over the years. The United States Air Force Association (USAAF) gift history in Fort Dodge, Iowa began with the organization of the Air Force Reserve Officers' Training School (AERTS) in 1947. The AERTS was an educational institution for enlisted air force officers and their families, and it became one of the USAF's primary sources of officer training. The first major gift to the AERTS was a hangar and associated facilities in 1951. In 1964, Major General Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first USAF Commander-in-Chief, USAFE. As Commander-in-Chief, he assigned responsibility to the Wingate Institute for Studies in Intelligence and Security at Wright-Patterson AFB for development of unique intelligence programs within USAFE. In 1990, Major General John Fetterman assumed command of USAF Europe Command effective 1 May 1990. He appointed Brigadier General Donald Kapp as his Assistant Deputy Commander (Air Forces I). On 15 October 1991 MajGen Fetterman assumed command from Brigadier General Kapp with effect from 16 October 1991 when he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel general level and designated Assistant Deputy Commander (Air Forces I). From 1 February 1992 until his retirement on 31 December 1992 LtGen Fetterman served as Chief Master Sergeant at Wright Patterson AFB where he directed all aspects related to inmate housing and discipline within both Air National Guard wings facility status under USAFE Headquarters unit commands while also concurrently serving as Director -Manpower Affairs/Personnel Management Directorate at Headquarters USAF European Command responsible for all aspects affecting Manpower matters within those units including military personnel stationed overseas except NATO member nation forces providing security support within those nations' airspace etc...
Fort Dodge, Iowa was founded in 1847 by Captain John S. Butler and his family. The town grew rapidly around the fort, and in 1855 it became a city. The city was enlarged many times, and finally disappeared in 1911 when it became a part of Des Moines. Fort Dodge is now a small neighborhood within the city of Des Moines. The fort was built on the site of an old Methodist church that had been destroyed by a fire in 1846. The fort was completed in 1847 and served as the base for the Indian wars fought by Iowa settlers against Native Americans. After being used as a military post for several years, the fort was abandoned in 1861 and sold to members of the Butler family who turned it into their home until 1893 when they sold it to Colonel Jameson Noble which made it available to students at Drake University for use as a dormitory. In 1927, the university moved out of Fort Dodge and converted it into an observatory which continues to use portions of the fort today. Today, Fort Dodge is known for its museum which contains items from both the early days of Fort Dodge (1847-1858) as well as more recent history including artifacts from World War II (1942-1945). The museum also has an active research library that houses over 100 books on various topics relating to Fort Dodge history and local culture.
