Tactical coffee began in Dubuque, Iowa as a small business in the early 1900s. The first coffee house was founded by three friends who pooled their money to open the first roastery in 1912. Between 1912 and 1916, The Coffee House served over 2,000 cups of Turkish-roasted coffee. In the 1940s and 1950s, the city of Dubuque experienced rapid growth thanks to its phosphate industry and military presence. This led to an increase in traffic and noise on Market Street which caused several businesses to close their doors between 1951 and 1957. However, due to the revitalization of Dubuque following World War II, many local businesses reopened including The Coffee House. In 1955, The Coffee House became one of only two remaining original downtownDubuque restaurants (the other being Jesse's Place). The restaurant continued serving quality coffee until it was closed for good in 1987 after more than 50 years of operation. Despite its closure, The Coffee House has left a lasting legacy on Dubuque with its significant role in the city’s history. Today, many locals enjoy a cup of Turkish-roasted coffee at one of the restaurant's many locations throughout town.

Dubuque, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa and the county seat of Dubuque County. The population was 84,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1854 by Clearwater (later Dubuque) merchants John Henry Irwin and James Hickey as a trading post on the upper Iowa River. In 1859, it became an incorporated town with a population of about 100. It experienced rapid growth during the early years of this century; in 1900 it had a population of 2,500 and by 1910 had reached 5,000. A new downtown development was built in 1916-17 to replace an older wooden fortification which had burn down two years earlier. The fortifications were replaced by more modern architecture; today they are known as "the City Walls". In 1968, Dubuque annexed adjacent towns of Williamsburg (now West Des Moines) and Cedar Rapids; these towns retained their own distinct identities until 2000 when they all became part of Dubuque proper. The annexation removed some 830 residents from Cedar Rapids which remains its smallest size metropolitan area by far. As a result of this merger, Dubuque has become one of America's most densely populated cities – more people live there than in any other American city with over 500,000 citizens combined.(1) The idea for suburban sprawl in America went back to President George Washington's surveyors who warned that if farmland were left undeveloped large sections would be available for housing within 10 miles (16 km). This led to what is now called "urban village" zoning where areas closer to cities are developed while those further away are preserved as open space or rural farmland subject to industrial or agricultural uses only under certain conditions such as special planning permissions granted through government committees chaired by mayors or governors.(2) Dubuque emerged from this formative period largely thanks to Mayor Harry Kelley who pushed for it despite strong opposition from urbanites who saw potential problems such as pollution from factories and traffic congestion created due to high concentrations of workers near downtownDubuques original slogan “A Town That Can Add” stuck with him throughout his career because he believedDubuiquer should not be just another small business town but something larger that could bring people together both inside and outside the community

During these early days of coffee brewing technology, many soldiers drank coffee while on duty in order to stay alert and focused. This practice continued even into World War II when caffeine was not allowed in most combat zones. Today, many people still enjoy Tactical Coffee because it provides an easy way to stay focused on tasks at hand without having too much caffeine intake
