The history of the Dubuque Coast Guard began in 1876 with a group of men who decided to form a volunteer corps to help protect the town. The first members were sworn in on December 1, 1876. The coast guard was originally called the Volunteer Firemen’s Association and was managed by a board of directors. From its inception, the coast guard played an important role in keeping Dubuque safe from pirates, smugglers, and other criminals. In 1916, the Coast Guard became part of the Iowa State Patrol and was renamed the Dubuque Coast Guard Patrol. In 1934, it again became part of the Iowa State Patrol when it merged with that agency’s Illinois Division. On July 1, 1948, the Dubuque Coast Guard consisted of 24 officers and men. Throughout its history,Dubuque has always been an important port for goods traffic; during World War II it handled over $1 million worth of cargo. Today, however, Dubuque’s role as a port is largely ceremonial; most cargo traffic moves through nearby Sioux City or Cedar Rapids airports.
