The history of the Dubuque, Iowa Army Garrison begins with the establishment of a military post in 1851. The garrison was established as part of the United States Army’s efforts to deter Native American attacks on U.S. forces and settlers in what is now Dubuque, Iowa. Initially, the garrison consisted of a small detachment of soldiers who patrolled the area around present-dayDubuque and delivered supplies to Fort Atkinson. In 1857, an expansion program for the Dubuque Army Garrison included the addition of a arsenal and storehouse. This new structure helped support army operations in central Iowa during Waco incidents and other civil disturbances in that state. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President, he ordered the mobilization of all U.S. armies for service in Confederate Territory Texas under command of General James Longstreet. The DubuqueArmy Garrison responded by deploying troops to help protect Santa Fe from Union attack. As World War I began, Dubuque enlisted citizens in its effort to provide food, fuel and munitions for military efforts overseas. After hostilities ended in 1918, military duties at Dubuque gradually diminished as peacetime responsibilities took over. However, due to renovations at Fort Atkinson beginning in 1951, dubuableaguegarrison reopened on July 1st that year with an increased complement of soldiers including members from neighboring counties).
