The Dubuque Air Force Base was the first United States military installation to receive an air defense system in 1944 and has since been home to over 1,000 Air Force members and their families. The base’s early years were spent helping equip the USAAF with fighter planes. In 1949, the Dubuque Wing of the USAF was activated and became responsible for providing support for Tactical Air Command (TAC). The wing adopted its current name in 1957 when it moved from Niagara Falls, New York to Dubuque. Since 1961, the Dubuque AFB Annex has housed two squadrons of F-4 Phantom II aircraft. These dual-role aircraft have played an important role in many campaigns throughout eastern Europe during Operation Allied Force and Operation Desert Storm. Additionally, the annex is home to Headquarters Squadron 38th Fighter Group which flew Boeing E-3D Sentinals during Operations Noble Eagle and Endeavour. In October 2006, Dyess AFB announced that they would be closing their doors effective September 30th, 2007 due to budget cuts necessitated by sequestration within Congress as well as a decrease in military spending around the world. This left much of Air Force gifting history at Dyess AFB behind as part of its closure process. In 1946, The United States Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which established Dubuque as an air force base. The act also designated 1/8th Aviation Division of the Iowa Army National Guard as the first air force unit on base. In 1951, The United States Air Forces Europe was activated and Dubuque became an important staging ground for fighter planes flying missions over western Europe. In 1957, The United States Air Forces Korea was activated and Dubuque became involved in aerial combat against North Korean forces. In 1966, The United States Air Forces Europe was disbanded and Dubuque reverted back to its original role as an air forcebase. Today,Dubuque AFB is home to four squadrons of F-16 Fighting Falcons and two squadrons of E-7J Hawk aircraft.
Dubuque, Iowa is a city in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,489 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Dubuque County. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Dubuque were Germans who arrived in 1836. They founded a log cabin on the east side of town and named it "Dubs". In 1838, three brothers - Jacob Hubler, Gottlieb Hubler and Wilhelm Conrad Hubler - started a grocery store on North Third Street which became one of the largest stores in the area. In 1841 they opened a store on South Fourth Street which became known as "Hubs". In 1848, two brothers - John Fenton and Charles Fenton - began another grocery store on West Seventh Street which became known as "Fenton's". In 1850, German immigrant George Cramer bought land at what is now East Walnut Avenue and Main Street and built a small brick building which served as the town hall for about 30 years before being replaced by the current building in 1907. In 1857 Isaac Newton moved to Dubuque from Manitoba with his family and settled down near present-day Elmwood Avenue and Third Street. He started an agricultural business that grew into one of the largest in town until he sold it to A&P Foods in 1928. Many churches were built around this time including St Johns Episcopal Church (1887), First Lutheran Church (1891), Methodist Episcopal Church (1893) and Baptist Churches (1902). One contributing factor to increased growth was an increase in trade due to an expanding rail line connecting cities throughout America with new markets such as Europe. One of Dubuque's most famous residents was Lloyd Pugh who played baseball for local teams beginning in 1903 until his retirement in 1951. Other notable citizens include humorist Bob Hope (1920-2006), actor/director John Wayne (1917-1985) and author Ken Follett (1907-2002).

Dubuque, Iowa is a small town located in western Iowa. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. Dubuque was founded in 1854 and has been the county seat of Dubuque County since 1857. It is the only city in Dubuque County. The original plat for the city was called "City Point". In 1878, City Point was renamed to honor General James K. Polk. In 1915, Dubuque became an all-city community with a population of 20,000 people. The first all-city school building was built in 1916 and served as the city's high school until it burned down in 1978. The current high school building opened in 2002 and is used by both the Dubuque Community School District and the Dubuo University System. The history of present-day Dubuque can be traced back to when settlers first arrived in what is now Iowa Territory during the late 1800s. As farming became more important as a means of subsistence for many early settlers, water supplies were scarce and land prices increased accordingly. To make access to water easier and provide better acreage for agriculture, several large ditches were dug around present-dayDubuqueville on which homes stand today (the largest being about east of downtown). By 1853, over 150 people had settled near what would becomeDubuquesville after crossing from Illinois into what is now Iowa Territory on horseback or wagon trains laden with flour and other goods that had just recently come overland from Missouri through Nebraska Territory on their way to California gold fields (the Overland Mail Stagecoach Route). This group of families included Methodist missionaries’ parents who had fled religious persecution in China during 1850–1851; Frontiersman Hyrum Smith; Reuben Mayhew (brother of Mormon leader Brigham Young); Solomon Starkweather; Amos Kendall; John Cramer; David Wells; John Witherspoon (of course future United States Senator George Rogers Clark); Enos Mills; Elijah Cookseye …and others who came westward during this period: citizens Samuel Seamans (born 1795), Jesse Sellers (1799), Isaac Cookseye (1800), Ezekiel Strong (1801), Daniel Steele (. . . ), David Brownell (. . .)
