Drewry, USNRF when he donated a large quantity of munitions to help fight World War II. In 1951, Admiral James Stockdale presented Admiral Nimitz with a ship-load of naval supplies as a thank you for his assistance during the Korean War. In 1973, Rear Admiral Harry Crouch transferred 1 million dollars from the USS Constitution Foundation to the Iowa Naval Museum in tribute to Lt. Commander Samuel Dyson (USN). This gift made Missouri City, Iowa the first city in Iowa to receive an USS Constitution commemoration plaque. Since its inception as a department of the Navy, naval gifts from Des Moines have helped support several aspects of our local community: education, recreation, research and development, and tourism. The United States Naval Service was founded in 1775 as a result of the Revolution. The service has grown to become one of the most powerful and respected institutions in American society. The navy is responsible for many important aspects of U.S. foreign policy, including maritime security and deterring aggression from abroad. Navy gift history goes back to the Revolutionary War. Benjamin Franklin, then an experienced printer and member of the Continental Congress, commissioned a book called A Vindication of the Rights of British America (1776). This book argued that the colonies were not alone in their grievances against Great Britain and that they deserved their own government with its own policies, resources, and defenses. Franklin also ordered printing presses set up in Philadelphia so that he could distribute this new information more effectively. In 1777, John Adams became President of the United States after George Washington's death. Adams immediately began looking for ways to increase U.S.-British relations while preserving our independence from Great Britain. In response to this challenge, he ordered Commodore John Rodgers to build a Navy hospital ship named HMS Lexington into a floating hospital colony on Long Island Sound so that American soldiers could be treated without having to leave their homes or travel far away. This innovative move helped improve military morale among American troops during wartime and strengthened our ability to respond quickly when needed overseas! While Adams was president, USS Constitution was built at Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Newport News Virginia by order of Sir Samuel Graves - one of England's most influential naval officers at the time! Construction began on Constitution on November 5th, 1787 and lasted until May 11th, 1789! The purpose behind USS Constitution's construction was not only scientific but also financial: she would serve as an example for other navies around the world as evidence that it could be done successfully even if there were no available warships large enough or skilled enough to carry out such an undertaking! After USS Constitution arrived at her new homeports – Norfolk Virginia (now Portsmouth) and Boston Massachusetts – she served as part of English convoy duty off North America during Queen Anne's War (1793-97). Finally after years Of hard work by her crewmates aboard ship & dedication by Captain James Cook who sailed alongside her On his first voyage across Atlantic Ocean As Commanding Officer HMS Terror he christened her "Constitution" on July 21st 1802 just 3 weeks before his death at sea aged 77 years old! He left behind him a legacy which still continues today with Sailors serving aboard HM Ships Her Majesty's Coast Guard carrying out various duties worldwide including search & rescue missions etc….she is now preserved museum inside National Maritime Museum along side many other Historic Vessels
