As part of this changeover, metropolitan area boundaries were established which included both Des Moines proper and neighboring counties including Grimes County to its east and west; Cedar Rapids County to its north; Northwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University)to its south; and Sioux City to its southeast. This enlarged metropolitan area has seen significantresidential development since then with many new high-rise buildings erected near downtownDes Moines while major shopping malls have been developed adjacent to Interstate 20/94 corridor stretching from Cedar Rapids through Waterlooand Johnston Counties southward into western Illinois
