The history of the Coast Guard in Des Moines, Iowa begins with its inception on May 26, 1887. The organization was created to provide a means for law enforcement officers on the Des Moines River and its tributaries to do their job effectively and efficiently. One of the first Coast Guardsmen in Iowa was Captain John A. Dickey who served from 1889-1892. At that time, the Coast Guard had only five boats and was used primarily for patrolling the riverbanks. In 1912, it was decided that a more permanent structure should be erected on the riverbank and this led to the erection of Fort Snelling in 1913. This fort served as both Headquarters for the Coast Guard during World War I and as a training ground for future Coast Guardsmen. It also became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Des Moines because it offered views of downtown Des Moines and Lake Michigan from its roofline overlooking First Street. In 1940, it was decided that there needed to be a new headquarters located closer to city residents so that better communication could be had between local law enforcement agencies and Headquarters staff. The decision led to the erection of Governors Island which still stands today as an important part of what is now called Homeland SecurityHQ inDes Moines. In 1978, it was decided that Headquarters should move farther into town so that more efficient use could be made of resources within DESMOND COUNTY while still providing access to all necessary city services via Queens Drive/First Street near City Hall (now known as State Capitol). This change resulted in what is known as “The Shifting Sands” location where Headquarters now resides next door to US Bank Arena (formerly Wells Fargo Center).

The Des Moines Coast Guard Station has been a part of the city's community since 1912. The station was designed by architect George S. Patton and opened in 1912. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station moved to its present location on First Street in downtown Des Moines.

The first European settlers in what is now Des Moines were Major James Krieger and his men who arrived on July 14th 1836 from Illinois via Omaha City on their way to wagon trains headed for California. They built a log cabin near present day Clybourn Street and Mill Creek. Krieger's group was followed by three other groups over the next several years until all but one (the Captain Cook party) reached Iowa Territory by 1840. Iowa Territory was organized on August 15th 1846 when Territorial Governor John Hennepin appointed General David Ralston to lead an army from Council Bluffs east to Sioux City to quench Indian resistance to Ulysses S Grant's Invasion of Iowa Territory Iowa set up its own government with a governor and legislature which met intermittently for six years until it relocated permanently to Des Moines on January 29th 1857 under then Territorial Governor William Cushing In 1860 Des Moines replaced Council Bluffs as the new capital of Iowa because it had been chosen as an attractive site for an agricultural center due to its location close to major rivers and its ability to build roads connecting those areas In 1893 Des Moines became home of one of America's first high schools when West Side High School opened adjacent to Progress Memorial Park In 1907 Ames Collegeopened nearby at 19 South First Street

Des Moines, Iowa is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 153,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County and the largest city by population in the state of Iowa. The name "Des Moines" originated from Des Moines Creek. One account says it was given to a man who could speak Indian languages, while another story says it means "humble beginnings." The first Europeans to visit what is now Des Moines were French traders in 1763. A fur trader, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, founded a trading post here in 1802. At first, trading was done only with Native Americans and other settlers near present-day Minneapolis/St Paul. However, over time trade with indigenous nations began to increase as European settlement increased around this area. In 1836, the Mississippi River flooded and destroyed most of eastcentral Iowa; Des Moines became an all-new town on high ground emerging from waterlogged territory for the first time since before Europeans had arrived in this region. In 1847–48 more than 2200 men worked on construction of the Illinois Central Railroad which linked Chicago with St Louis via Des Moines and Council Bluffs (present day Omaha). This railroad would play an important role in helping establish Des Moines as one of America's leading agricultural cities during its early years. In 1896 when Iowa became a state – following Reconstruction – Des Moines became its capital city under Governor George Biddle and continued to grow rapidly into the 20th century becoming one of America's fastest-growing cities with over 1 million people by 1950. During World War II Japanese forces bombed the City Hall buildings killing many people including Mayor John Larkin on December 15th 1945 just two days after Japan surrendering unconditionally at Tokyo Bay; this event also helped start what has come to be known as downtownDes Moines’s “ restaurateur” or “restaurant row” development that continues today along Grand Avenue near First National Bank Stadium
