The Air Force has been a part of the Iowa communities for over 60 years. The first air force unit in Des Moines was activated on November 1, 1917. The 16th Bombardment Wing became operational on December 12, 1942 and was assigned to First Air Force. On July 20, 1945 the wing was disbanded and its assets were reassigned to Second Air Force which at that time was part of Ninth Air Force. On November 15, 1951 First USAF Base Unit (HQ) moved from Cedar Rapids to Sioux City as the organization transitioned from an all-air arm to an air warfare service branch with four fighter wings. Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HHQS) moved from Cedar Rapids to Sioux City also on November 15 becoming the first USAF command post in Iowa state capital city since World War II. On January 6, 1952 First AFB activated its last squadron; the 433d Fighter Wing which became operational on February 1, 1952 as one of three subordinate commands under Fifth Tactical Air Command headquarters located at RAF Fairford England with six squadrons flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning aircraft equipped with electronic countermeasures devices called MAGs or “Making Monterey” contracts for providing warning of enemy bomber activity over Europe during the early days of nuclear weapons development. In 1957 First AFB acquired two McDonnell F4 Phantom III jet fighters and began deploying them into Europe as part ofOperationALPHA while concurrently conducting operations out of RAF Mildenhall England using Douglas A-26 Invader bombers equipped with radar assisted bombing capabilities known as BLACK LIGHTS which successfully destroyed numerous strategic targets within German territory including Dresden Castle and other key installations without Casualties among Allied Forces personnel!!! These tactics continued through OPERATION GRACEFUL RETURN untilactivated by HQ USAF Dec 5, 1958!! As previously stated this is the only USAAF base in Iowa State Capital City continuously active throughout World War II!!!!! In 1969 when ADC assumed control over United States European Forces stationed overseas ADC activated TenthAirForce Control Element at First AF situated adjacent to RAF Fairford England responsible for all USAAF activities worldwide including operation Desert Storm !! This highly successful response by ThirdAirforce Commander Desert Storm led directly to establishment of permanent TenthAF Center later located at Hagerstown MD!!!! In 1991 after 10 years/abandonment most resources were transferred back from ADC functionsaturing SeventhAirforce Command established responsible for global defense support homeland missions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and proud history of giving gifts to friends and family. From cigarettes, coffee or soda to watches or toys, the USAF has always been there for its friends and families. One of the earliest examples of USAF generosity was in 1941 when Colonel Leslie Groves donated two P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes to the service. In 1946, after the end of World War II, General George Custer presented a Lockheed P-38 Lightning airframe as a gift to USAF Academy cadets. The following year, General Curtis LeMay presented an Advanced Targeting System guidance system to USAF pilots at Edwards AFB in California. In 1950, MajorGeneral James Gavin gave a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter jet trainer as a gift to RAF High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire UK. And in 1951, General Hoyt Sclerdon presented an American F-86 Sabre fighter aircraft to Italian Air Forces pilot Giovanni Cavalli. Since then, USAF generosity has continued unabated. In 2003, General Wesley Clark gave two Boeing 737s worth $200 million each to NASA in order to help fund space exploration initiatives. In 2006, Admiral John Kirby offered six McDonnell Douglas DC-10s for sale for $240 million each - making them one of the most expensive aviation gifts ever given by any organization. And last but not least, LieutenantGeneral Michael Flynn recently gifted three Airbus A321neo jets valued at over $160 million each to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Foundation – making him one of the largest donors ever made by any individual institution within the United States military!
The USAF Gift History program is designed to commemorate the donation, gift or sale of airforce items and memorabilia. The history of this program began in 1941 when Colonel George C. Marshall offered the Military Artillery Museum at Fort Worth, Texas, a collection of more than 1,500 cannons, rifles and other firearms. This offer was followed by others from Marshall which included the donation of 2,000 aircraft in 1948; the purchase of Air Force One in 1961; and the donation of nearly 7,000 pieces of aviation equipment in 1984.
Des Moines, IA is the capital of Iowa and the largest city in the state. The population was 1,515,735 as of 2019. It is also the county seat for Polk County. The first settlement in what is now Des Moines was a small post office on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1847, Reverend Jesse Samuel Morse founded a small printing press near what is now Cedar Rapids to publish religious tracts from his home in Iowa City, Iowa. This early paper industry declined after other publications became available and Morse died in 1853 without any children to take over his business. A new generation of entrepreneurs began developing this region with local lumberyards becoming one of Des Moines's most successful businesses during this time. The city proper was incorporated on January 17, 1857, as part of an effort by Mayor John A. Hennepin to make Des Moines more self-sufficient and attractive to national attention as a stopover on stagecoaches traveling between Chicago and St Louis during the American Civil War. At its incorporation ceremonies were presided over by President James Buchanan who said "I rejoice that our city has been given safe harbor by your Government." In 1870 Des Moines annexed neighboring counties – Grimes, Guthrie, Scott and Linn – giving it a total area of .
