The Iowa National Guard has been a part of the state of Iowa since 1867. The first national guard unit was organized in Davenport on October 2, 1867. The Davenport Unit was composed of sixty-six men and six women who helped protect the town during the American Civil War. In 1865, the Iowa National Guard was decommissioned due to budgetary cuts and never reactivated again until 1921 when it became an all-volunteer unit. The first national guard gift history in Davenport occurred in 1865 when six soldiers from the Walker County Guards donated their equipment and uniforms to help keep local businesses open during the American Civil War. From then until 1971, there have been over one hundrednational guard gifts given to individuals or organizations in Davenport alone! One of the most famous national guard gifts given in Davenport is the “Johnny Appleseed†apple pie which was given to General John J. Pershing by Mrs. Everett Swayne on November 9, 1917 as a thank you for his service during World War I. The pie is still popular today and can be found at many county fairs across Iowa! Two other nationally recognized national guards gifts are the “Iowa Hawkeyes†helmet which was donated by General Curtis LeMay on May 6, 1966 and “National Guard Flagpole†which was donated by Colonel Tom Hickey on July 1, 1970. both items are still displayed at various military museums across America!

Davenport is located on the Mississippi River, about 30 miles (48 km) west of Des Moines and 50 miles (80 km) east of Cedar Rapids. In 2009, Forbes listed Davenport as one of "America's 100 Most Dynamic Cities". The first settlers in what is now Davenport were three families from New England who arrived in 1788. They named their land for George Washington and built a trading post near present-day downtown Davenport to sell goods they produced on their farmstead near present-day West Side Road and Illinois Avenue. The town site was surveyed in 1824 and chosen as the permanent capital of Polk County because it offered good agricultural land with easy access to transportation. The first courthouse was built here in 1828. Davenport grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location on the river and its role as a commercial center for cotton production, railroads, meatpacking operations, banking institutions, health care services, and other businesses. During World War II many new housing developments were constructed around downtown Davenport in response to wartime demand for homes by soldiers stationed nearby; most notably Riverside Drive which developed into one of the most popular areas in town today.
