Davenport also played a significant role during World War II when it became home to both Headquarters Third Air Force (HQ-3AF) and Headquarters Fifth Air Force (HQ-5AF). HQ-3AF operated out of nearby Grissom AFB while HQ-5AF located at Wright Field near Dayton, Ohio, made use of various airfields throughout central Illinois and western Kentucky to provide strategic bombardment support for Allied armies fighting against Nazi Germany and Japan respectively. In 1945, HQ-3AF moved its headquarters back to Davenport following OperationCrossroads which aimed to end World War II by driving Japanese forces from Burma through India into British territory east of Ceylon].
