Davenport, Iowa has a long and rich coffee history. The first coffee beans were roasted in the area in 1847 by John T. Henshaw. In 1870, Emmanuel Justus opened the first local roastery. Davenport's earliest cafes were located near the railroad station on First Street and Hennepin Avenue. By 1907, there were more than 20 cafes in the city.
Davenport, Iowa is a small city in the midwest of the United States. The population was 77,012 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dubuque County and is located on the Mississippi River near its confluence with the Missouri River. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Davenport were French Jesuit missionaries in 1795-96. They named their new town after Samuel Davenport, an Indian trader and member of the General Court of Louisiana who had recently come to America to trade with British traders. The first post office was established in 1802, and by 1825 there were 11 storehouses, a hotel, a millinery store, 3 blacksmiths shops, 4 wagon shops and 8 carpenters workshops in all. In 1827 a gristmill was built and began operation; it continued to be used until 1959. By 1830 Davenport had about 100 residents; by 1860 it had 1,600 residents. In 1840 Illinoisan Israel Putnam arrived here with his family as part of a group traveling westward for resettlement under US auspices. He founded putnam's Landing on what is now Davenport’s south side (now known as Putnam Park). At first he raised chickens but later developed into one of Dubuque County’s leading farmers and politicians over many years before dying at age 89 in 1948 surrounded by his animals on his farmstead that still stands today just off Uptown Avenue east of downtownDubuque., Putnam may have been instrumental in giving rise to present-day Dubuque County because he bought most or all of its land from Ottawa County for $4 per acre when land values were still low enough so that anyone could purchase it! In 1859 Stephen Auld opened the oldest dry goods store west of Chicago – Auld's Emporium – located at Third Street and Dodge Avenue northwest corner current Main Street opposite then First National Bank building now called State Fair Park paralleling main street north/south across from old High School building which was burned down during this time frame . This store operated continuously until 1969 when it closed due to changes in consumer demand for more modernized stores such as Sears & Roebuck which opened up next door soon after Auld's Store finally caught up with technology !! Auld played an important role not only economically but also architecturally designing some very fine earlyDubuque architecture including original bell tower on Third Street downtown later replaced by newer structure also known as "Old State House" dating back to c1875
