The Iowa Army National Guard was organized on November 15, 1861. The first Iowa unit to be mustered in the Union army was Company K of the 1st Regiment of Iowa Infantry. That company arrived at Camp Douglas, Illinois on December 12 and soon afterwards took part in the First Battle of Fort Dodge. One month after their arrival, they were mustered into service as a battalion in the 3rd Regiment of infantry. On January 8, 1862, they participated in the battle at Horseshoe Bend and three days later fought at Chickamauga. From this time until 1865 they served with distinction in all types of campaigns including the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. For his heroism during these engagements, General George Armstrong Custer was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Abraham Lincoln on July 6, 1864. This honor is shared only with members from World War I who received it for actions excepting Marengo where both generals were wounded. In total, there have been twenty-four recipients of this medal (twenty-two men and four women). Iowa also has one other military award which is unique to that state; the Congressional Gold Medal which is bestowed upon individuals or groups who have made great contributions to Congress or American citizens generally through service or sacrifice for country/the nation
