The U.S. Air Force has been gifting gifts to the people of Davenport, Iowa since 1942. Other planes gifted by the USAF include a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber which arrived at Davenport Municipal Airport on November 3rd, 1944; a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jet which arrived at Davenport Municipal Airport on February 16th, 1946; and an F-86 Sabre Jet Fighter which arrived at John F Kennedy International Airport on July 26th, 1974. AAF also bestowed awards upon individuals who contributed their time or services to support Operation Paperclip during World War II. These honorary awards typically included clothing or equipment that could be used by American soldiers stationed overseas during hostilities against Nazi Germany or Japan. Awards such as these are often referred to as "gift certificates." During Operation Desert Storm in 1991–1992, assets donated by residents of Tucson County were recycled into new military equipment for use by Army troops based in southern Illinois fighting Iraqi forces outside Baghdad (see photo below). It can be interesting to think about how various items might have been used had they not been donated instead by those living close enoughto them!
